If Verlander doesn't win it, it's a joke this year. He's the most valuable to his team. No doubt.

I really really really disagree.

Bautista is far an away the most important player to his team.

I'd be more inclined to be on the Bautista bandwagon if they were in contention. He's been great for the Jays, but the fact that the Tigers are going to make the postseason is a big reason why Verlander should win it. Looking at the rest of their starting rotation, I have a hard time believing they'd even be over .500 without Verlander this year, let alone in contention.

The language in the voting guidelines is so ambiguous that you can make literally any case for who is the "most valuable". If you mean most productive, then hands-down the most productive player according to both FanGraphs and B-Ref is Jose Bautista, who has amassed more WAR (yeah yeah yeah) than any other pitcher or position player. If you're looking for the guy who most helped his team stay above the black, then I don't have a problem with Justin Verlander being part of the voting and I'm sure he'll get a sizable chunk of the votes.

I guess I can agree with that.

I just think it should go to the best player. Not the best player on a team that makes te playoffs.

EDIT: Misunderstood the latest post. Bautista is a phenomenal talent this year for Toronto and deserves recognition for that. However, I don't see writers voting for a player on a non-contender. Right now though, I'd rather see him get it over a Yankee/Red Sox/Tiger player.

They did so for Andre Dawson and Alex Rodriguez. Dawson was a really MEH pick and Alex Rodriguez was just so good they had no choice. It's up to your personal perspective whether you think Jose Bautista is that much better than everyone else. If you think the "being on a playoff contender" metric is worth more than a win, then I guess Jose Bautista isn't the MVP.

As much as I hate Verlander, the 21 wins he's achieved for them are extremely valuable. Like I said earlier, without him I don't see them being the division leader in the Central. That's more valuable to me than Bautista. Not taking anything away from him, but the fact that Detroit is a winner because of Verlander IMO means a lot more to me than a player on a middle of the road team.

That's fine, and that's how I think a portion of the voters will vote.

I think so too. On a side note, am I the only one who finds it a little strange that Bautista's numbers skyrocketed so quickly? He was a pretty below-average player until recently.

You're not alone, but I don't really give a shit about "potential enhancements" so I think it's pretty awesome and don't really question it  There are a bunch of articles about that if you care to Google them. It's as equally likely that he changed his hitting mechanics as it is that he got some magic voodoo cocktail.

I actually did take a look at his mechanics. He has re-worked them a bit, but not enough to boost his stats and production as much as it has. I played with a few guys in high school who changed up their movement and it worked to an extent. Maybe it worked out exponentially well for him. Only he and his coach know the real reason. Lol

Changed his swing and has a good hitting coach. If only we could do that with Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham.

I had a few teammates change their mechanics in high school and they had some positive effects, but not as drastic as those that we're seeing with Bautista. Could just be that our hitting coach wasn't as good as Bautista's although he was a former major league player and coach or that Bautista started juicing.
