It's not our call anyway. I think I'll go with the guy who has like a .620 winning percentage over the last 297 reg season games...he kind of knows whats best.

I know this seems like an obvious call, Montero hasn't really produced and looks old behind the plate, but don't underestimate the value a veteran catcher to his pitchers. Maddon could very well decide he's not going to make that choice and go with three catchers. I think it's 60-40 that Montero makes it.

Right..
And as we see..

Maddon has stopped starting Montero(7 starts last 34 games) in favor of catching Contreras more, to get Contreras and the starters comfortable with each other as they head into the playoff..

He not going to sit Montero for 2 months (assuming he doesn't start much in Sept) and then just go to him cold, in the playoff , and after not really catching and getting into a rhythm with the starters, like Contreras has been doing...

He's absolutely trying to see how his pitchers perform without Montero catching. What we don't know is how he thinks it's going. Conteras had a tough game yesterday, how many he have in the next month will tell the tale.

Haven't had many lately , considering theyve gone 24-7 last 31 games..

What was the tough game?
A couple balls got by him

If that what you're calling a tough game, Montero been having a tough year with that then...

You don't sit a catcher for 2 months at end of season , just to see how another catcher and the pitchers perform to decide who going to start in playoff..

There what 3 weeks left, I'm sure he decided already.
cause if he didn't care for Contreras starting in playoff and felt it would hurt the starters, he would be catching Montero more now so they can get comfortable and a rhythm going again..
Instead he playing Contreras more.

I believe he meant also that Arrieta and him could not get on the same page. You don't want your starters getting frustrated, especially your ace.

Arrieta not getting frustrated

He likes having Contreras as his catcher and praised the hard work he has put in

So what constitutes success for the Cubs in the playoffs? Is it WS or bust? Or at least make it to the WS?

He was pretty frustrated on Saturday. His body language towards Contreras told the tale. One more of those gets a Montero a roster spot.

I think they have to make it there. Losing in the WS won't feel good but with the crapshoot that is the playoffs no one can call that a failure.

A couple balls? He was getting buckled by Arrieta cutter/slider. A lot of calls were missed by him receiving the ball terribly. Im not sure why people dont think he will carry three catchers. He has done it most of the year.

Also, Montero is running out a better OBP in the second half than Contreras. Contreras has been pretty bad in the second half. People are living on his hot start. The league adjusted and he needs to adjust back. Im not sure why Contreras is a slam dunk to people. Montero is one of the few vet leaders. He calls a hell of a game.

People think it's a slam dunk that Montero won't make the roster, I think that's a dangerous assumption. You think long and hard before you leave a seasoned catcher off a playoff roster, especially one that has been a leader like Montero has.

The rest Montero got because of Contreras has allowed him to get healthier. Notice Miggy is throwing people out at 2B again and hitting a little bit.

I thought this was funny. I guess a troll was saying things to Miggy on Twitter.

Miguel Montero ‏@miggymont26 19h19 hours ago

I'd pay to see how fast you can run after 8.5k innings squat down

Yeah, Montero is definitely at the end of his career. His decline has been pretty significant this year. Whatever is wrong with his back is probably going to end his playing days in the near future.

But he can still call a game and he does get timely hits, as Ommy said. He's been playing all year so I'm not sure how we can keep him off the playoff roster.

I think Maddon is a loyal guy and his players would run through a wall for him. Being said, guys like Monterro, Ross and Coghlan will make the playoff roster and Almora and LaStella might not

I agree with this. Coghlan would be a bubble guy. With Hammel in the pen they could shed a relief arm and add a bat. We would be talking about a PH role and they would have to weigh the numbers of these guys hitting in PH situations. As of now the best PH on the team is Szczur and they need a LH counter to him.

So you guys want Montero and Ross catching and what alternate between Soler Contreras and Baez in the starting lineup in a 5 game series..
Cause you know if Montero catches over Contreras then 2 of those 3 in Soler Baez and Contreras will be benched

Contreras has been the worst with the bat out of those 3 and hasnt been much better than Miggy OPS wise in the second half.
