Dice-K was pretty damned good the first two seasons. Then he broke.

Dice-K had one good season, his 2nd. even his 1st season (15 game winner) his era was 4.40

I understand that, but there are quite a few ways that Darvish is different than any other pitcher coming across from Japan. He is younger than Dice-K at time of posting and has put up much better numbers so far in his career. The other thing is that Yu Darvish has the body of an ace pitcher much more than any other import at 6'5" 215 lbs. There is always that risk, but like I said you don't get the opportunity to pay just cash for a 25 year old top of the rotation starter.

I don't think you can directly compare Yu to Dice-K. Two totally different guys.

True and that is why I don't think we can say because Dice-K burnt out that Darvish will as well. I will say this, if Darvish doesn't succeed here than it is going to be a long time before a Japanese pitcher gets more than a few million in a posting fee.

Indeed. The main difference is that Yu seems to have much better control than Dice-K. I can't seem to find Dice-K's Japan stats but he had a great strikeout rate, just walked way too many people.

This is something that pisses me off.

Why don't we compare someone overall vs players of the same position.

Instead of from one locale or nationality.

We will when he actually pitches in the states, but right now the only comparisons that are logical are of the same nationality.

No.. You aren't getting the point.

You can compare ANY not yet MLB pitcher to another.

Sure you can compare but when there are significant differences in the talent level, style of play, ballpark, workload for pitchers, etc. Exactly how useful are those compairsons?

Did anyone ever find Dice-K's rate stats while in Japan? I didn't bother to look past his B-Ref page.

Yu's Nippon stats are there though. Dice-K struck out 8-9 per 9 at MLB level in the AL East, and Yu's right around there now.

If you consider Japan as AAAA and operate under the assumption that a good control plus strikeout pitcher is going to have better success than a guy with bad control and no swing-and-miss stuff, then it's likely that Yu will find good success at MLB. He might not win a Cy Young or win 20 games a season if you're into that stuff, but he can still be valuable.

I am glad the Cubs did not take the risk of investing 100 million in a pitcher who is talented and unproven.

I would rather invest the 100 million in a proven commodity like Fielder and offset the pitching with a Joe saunders type player.

I can't imagine Darvish wanting to play in Canada, especially with a team that's not a lock to be a contending team.
