Sad to hear this. Can't be sure of the cause but the kind of life he lead takes a toll. Live hard, that's what he did. Can only imagine that he had no regrets though.

RIP Probie.
Whether you liked him as a RedWing or you liked him as a Blackhawk, the man always had the respect in my book. Took on all challengers, even the young kids at his later age. He had some epic battles with Domi, McSorley, Clark, Crowder, Grimson, and even a scrap with Kocur. Scored 29 goals one year and was an All-Star.

While the man had his troubles off the ice, I hope everyone focuses on the player he was on the ice and how great of a man he was, and a husband, and father of four. And don't forget, he started a "Detroit Sucks" chant from the 300-level of the UC. PRICELESS!!

FYI....his father passed away from a heart attack at the age of 41. Bob died at 45. Let's not jump to conclusions, but either way, way too young! RIP #24!!!

all 3 of my jerseys are Probie, red, white ,& black, all autoed, met the man a few times, big smile for the fans, eyes that were kind & kind of pierced you at the same time, hands, well thats what i remember the most. at the time i was 6'2"+ and 215lbs, i worked on cars and such for most of my life, hands quite nicked, his hands made mine look like i was a model or something, one knuckle as big as my thumb. this man was a warrior, back in the day when that meant something. RIP Mr. Probert your family has our prayers

This is sad on so many different levels. He is one of my favorite all time Hawks and I never held it against him that he is a former Red Wing. It also bothers me that he is only 3 years older than me. Of course his excesses far out paced mine, but still. Huge loss to Hockey fans, The Blackhawks and even the Red Wings.

My thoughts go out to Probie's family, friends, and fans. He was not just a heavy weigh, enforcer, or goon. He was also a very caring person off the ice.

RIP

I remember him coming into the 300 level during the preseason and chatting with the small number of us in attendance the year he was hanging them up. Class guy, you could tell he wanted to be out there on the ice.

RIP

Right when he came over the CHI, we had some mutual friends and we all went to an Aerosmith concert.

Some highlights of the nite, was him meeting me and my friend up at Hooters in Orland, with a "Goofy" tshirt on (the disney character)...him ordering 200 wings for 5 of us (so we can enjoy them on the ride home after the show, as he says). Trying to eat them while complaining the whole time he forgot his front teeth. Some guy walking up to the table where Chelios was one of our group of 5...and starts talking to Chris - "Hey, I heard you guys signed that guy - 'Bob Probear' - (the guy was pronouncing it like that)" ....and not knowing Probie was sitting right there, he asked Cheli if he thinks Probie will make the team (a real smart guy, huh). Chris points to Bob and says - "Why don't you ask him yourself, he's sitting right there".

At the show...when we were pulling in with the line of cars, me and one friend and Probie were in his Explorer (while my other friend rode with Chris)..there was a station wagon of kids smoking weed, and Probie commented on "those were the good ol' days" and went on to tell us how he cant do that stuff anymore and he had to meet this "Bettman" guy this week (this was after he flipped his bike). He went on to talk about the importance of having a chain on your wallet - in case that ever happened to us...so we dont lose our wallet.

There were some real funny things that happened all night - and all while not drinking. Cheli was always looking out for him when they were together - no drinking or anything around the guy. (I know people don't like Chris here, so hate the guy if you want. But he looked out for Bob as much as he could while they were teammates. NEVER were allowed to drink around the guy).

There were a few times we went to OTB as well, he was a real down to earth guy....sad times for his great wife and kids. RIP

Thanks for sharing that. Probie was a class act after he cleaned it up. Too young -- damn. RIP.

Probert was one of the last, and one of the best, Enforcers. Unlike some of the cement-headed goons out there now, not only would he rack up 20+ goals in a year, but also kick the snot out of you.

RIP Mr. Probert. If heaven is not your destination, Valhalla would welcome a warrior of your ilk.

Reading this thread makes me realize even MORE what a bonehead FA signing we just completed for Scott....

Yea because Probert is a dime a dozen... why didn't we go out and get the best enforcer this game has ever seen? Stupid Hawks!

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob a couple of times. Really nice guy and I'm very sad to see him go (especially being the same age as him). I still have my signed "Probie" hockey stick on display.

My prayers go out to his family.

Maybe it's just me, but to me there's a difference between and "enforcer" and a "goon".

A goon is a guy who's sole purpose is to fight, generally cannot play that well, sees little ice time, and when is on the ice is considered a "liability"

An enforcer is a guy who can play, can score, play defense, etc, to at least an average ability that is not a liability (even an asset) on the ice when out there, but also can fight incredibly well and kick the snot out of just about anyone they match up against.

Probie was definitly an enforcer. Enforcers are incredibly rare and I think as long as fighting is allowed, will always have a place in the game. Goons, OTOH, are on their way out IMHO.

You're right - Probert could play the game. His stats with Detroit are impressive - he'd be making $4 million a year in today's game with those numbers.

I was always a little sad watching him play in Chicago - he seemed to be a gentle giant who was forced reluctantly into his enforcer duties - but in interviews he seemed to accept it and not regret it.

RIP Bob.

(BTW this might seem morbid - but I hear the news on the sports radio station while I was driving - wasn't paying that much attention but heard "Blackhawks" and what I thought was "Bob Pulford" had died. This is wrong but I didn't feel bad - when I realized it was Bob Probert, I did indeed. )

I wish some of the highlight reels would show his playing and goalscoring instead of his fights. I can't watch his fights without feeling sad somehow.
