Hell or High Water>Sicario>Wind River

I just saw Wind River the other day. Unlike HoHW and Sicario, there is really nothing going on in this film. Very little to no subtext.

And the text that appears right before the credits...
missing persons statistics are kept for every demographic groups—save for Native American women, whose numbers remain unknown
has nothing to do with the film lol.

I did sicario yesterday it started really slow but was good 6.5/10. I will try the other two this week and next

I had the same take on Wind River.... wasn't a terrible movie, but the entire way thru they would hint what was gonna happen, then it would happen.

Someone replied to me that the thing in the credits was the point of the movie and I also argued the movie did nothing to expose that issue... if anything it creates a false sense that if any random Native American on a reservation dies mysteriously that an FBI agent or team will respond and take it seriously.

Last Doc watched: Icarus - highly recommended

Last non-Doc watched: Get Out. It was weird. I'm sure there was a major theme that I missed, but I didn't think it was as great as most people did. The end sucked ass.

Dark on Netflix was phenomenal. Way better than Stranger Things season 2. An easy 10/10 for me.

Godless is next up.

I've been hearing a lot of bad stuff about Last Jedi; too scared to see it but I gotta go through with it. Probably going Saturday.

Alright, I watched 2 episodes yesterday...
Story is very intriguing and the acting is pretty good.
But the subtitles!! I don't know if it's my internet connection, but it's like 2 second delay.

Probably is on a bit of a delay. Also, German and English don't exactly matchup. I was watching it with the English dub my first time around, and it wasn't the same as what was said on the subtitles. Might do straight German+subtitles for second go-around.

I give The Last Jedi an 8/10. I don't hate it as much as others in this thread seem to, but it's definitely not perfect.

Sicario was slow because that's the directors style. The same guy who did Arrival and the new Blade Runner. HoHW was directed by someone else, and has more traditional pacing.

The thing connecting these 3 films by the way, is the writer. People kind of see these films as some sort of trilogy.

The Greatest Showman 5/10

I’m not a fan of musicals, but I found this to be enjoyable. The cast, especially Hugh Jackman, gave a good performance. I feel like this movie should have been longer. It kind of just speeds through his whole childhood up until he’s in his 40s or 50s. And then it’s over right after he starts the circus. I feel like a lot of interesting things/aspects of PT Barnum’s life were left out. I can’t really comment on the portrayal since I don’t know a lot about him personally. From everything I’ve read, Barnum seems to have been a real asshole which isn’t how he was shown in the movie.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi. 6.5/10

This movie basically turns Luke into a self doubting/loathing, Emo, quitter. Once luke knew Snoke and Ren were laying waste to the galaxy he would have given a shit. Mark Hammel agrees that his character was fucked up in this movie... I guess the money is too good to not do the movie so I dont blame him.

The rest of the movie was ok.

Bright was better than critics give it credit for.

yea, I watched Bright last night and wasn't sure why it got bad reviews. Thought it was good.

Just went on RT. Audience gave it a 90%. It's the critics who gave it a 30%

It's pretty good honestly. It's almost as if the movie industry is scared that the big screen and profits are gonna be cut out so they have to sabotage this film. I really liked the three different classes Elves, humans, and orcs and their varying social status.

Basically you have mythology that occurred thousands of years ago which influences how all three classes are viewed. So the mythology imo isn't heavy handed.

Something pretty fucked up, but I liked (6-7/10ish): Excision. Portrait of a teenage girl with social interaction issues/mental illness. The stylistic choices mirror the plot/subplot, which is always a plus for me when considering the effectiveness of a film.

Think: if The Cell were an indie film, rather than big-budget...and stretch what they had going on in that movie as far as psychological imagery (less impressive in execution [again, indie flick], but more pertinent to the subject). I say a portrait as it is less of a narrative, and more of a character examination a la Donnie Darko or American Beauty. Definitely not for the squeamish, but if you like flicks similar to those I've included, then give it a watch.
