In terms of best ever, The Irishman cannot compete with Goodfellas, Godfather, the Departed, A Bronx Tale etc. But I thought Scorcese nailed it nostalgically with this cast and there are several newer age actors in this as well that portray what could be the future of gangster actors.

It’s based off of it. People say the story is bs and the Irishman has never been proved to even murder someone. Only thing they know is true is he was real good friends with Hoffa and he did have mob ties to buffalino

That's what I heard as well. that's why I think that part is pretty damn interesting in there

I dont believe that. I thought Pesci was amazing and so was Pacino. I thought some fight scenes with Denerio kinda sucked because of his age. I think this hit every Scorcese hook but we just are older. Younger kids would be amazed.

I watched JoJo Rabbit last week. Was a fantastic movie. I thought it was going to be a knee-slapper kind of comedy, but it's definitely not. Yeah, it's hilarious and witty, but also kinda sad and just overall a good movie.

It felt like dark Wes Anderson film.

Saw the Irishman. Watched half on Saturday night and the rest Sunday afternoon. It was well done. Enjoyed it. Like someone else said, it's not one that I think will be a classic and can watch over and over But I'd probably watch it again sometime.

I did find the ending part with Hoffa pretty interesting though as to how they think it all played out.

Has anyone read the book "I heard you paint houses?" Curious as to how close it is.
I read the book a couple years ago. I thought the book was very choppy and did not flow real well which is why I was looking forward to the movie.

The movie flowed properly and was easier to follow.

The book was comprised of interviews with Frank Sheeran, and was written almost chronologically according to what Sheeran said in interviews (i.e., revisiting something already described or going off on tangents) vs flowing chronologically in terms of the events themselves.

I personally don’t think The Departed ison a par with Goodfellas. The Godfather far outdoes them all. And A Bronx Tale was a much much inferior movie to those others. Bronx Tale was a wannabe mob movie.

On a side note, I received a return call from a client from whom we are trying to collect past due money and the name on the caller ID came up “Buffalino”,

“Tell you what. We will just write this off out of respect. “. ?

I like them all truthfully.
Donnie Brasco, Blow,Empire, Black Mass, Once Upon a time in America, etc etc.
If it involves organized crime, I'm in.

gonna be honest, rewatched Goodfellas and Cape Fear a couple weekends ago while hungover after a friend's birthday party blowout, and concluded that Scorsese might be just a little overrated. Hear me out: I loved Goodfellas as a kid, and Mean Streets before that, but he really could have just stopped at Mean Streets. Everything after that was either a repeat of the same thing (Casino sucked) or some bizarre, operatic bullshit (Gangs of New York, the Aviator).

Circling back, we started drinking whenever Ray Liotta said 'KAREN!' during Goodfellas and the Cape Fear remake was just fucking terrible.

Stopping after Mean Streets would mean no Taxi Driver or Raging Bull and Goodfellas is a masterpiece through and through. I don't agree Casino sucks but I would agree its a bloated retread of GF.

fair point, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull were great, and I considered Goodfellas a masterpiece when I was a kid (and it inspired David Chase to create the Sopranos so I can't knock it), so my apologies; I oversimplified. But I don't like Scorsese's later work. That said, I will probably watch the Irishman Sunday hungover.

I thought the Irishman was great. Fantastic acting. The de-aging is crazy. I can't believe people are nit-picking it. The fact that they can do something like that is incredible.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of his movies after 2000. One movie that I did not care for, but has become one of my favourites of his after rewatching is Bringing Out the Dead. And I am not a Nicholas Cage fan post Birdy, Moonstruck, and Peggy Sue Got Married. Edit - And Raising Arizona.

The Irishman was just okay. The younger CGI mouths were a distraction, and I found they couldn't make DeNero's posture that of a younger man. He moved like a 70 year old no matter how old he was intended to be.

Although Scorsese does have a painterly way of composing.

I remember watching Once Upon A Time in America long ago (twice), and have planned to again since it is on Netflix. But it is very long. I should break it into episodes and I will be fine. ?
