Antibiotics don't treat mono. Usually they are prescribed to help with some of the other things mono brings on, ie. Rash.
Mono is caused by the Epstein Barr virus. Someone might need steroids if the oral or neck swelling is enough that there is a risk of airway involvement. Sometimes a PO steroid, like Prednisone is given but many times it takes iv solumedrol or hydrocortisone to help with the swelling. These drugs work but have side effects. They screw up your blood sugar and folks on Prednisone tend to put on weight.
How long did they have you on the steroids? Most people I see on steroids that have weight problems are usually folks with either really bad asthma or older ladies with bad COPD that causes airway troubles. Yeah folks can get fat on the drugs but it also causes thinning skin and hair, increased risk of infection and sometimes it screws with your entire hormonal balancing system and you have trouble mounting what we call a stress response. It is pretty complicated, talking about HPA axis suppression but it interferes with your body's ability to fight off desease or respond to trauma.
lemon juice bro its a big help for your throat...take some water a dash of honey and squirt some lemon juice into water and drink itSo I have a really bad sore throat and it won't go away. I found some amoxicillin antibiotics from a few months ago that I never finished. So I'm taking those but it's not helping as of yet. Have only taken 2 so far though.
Been drinking hot tea and hot chocolate and tons of water to no avail. Any remedies you guys can suggest? Might be strep but idk. Really hoping these antibiotics kick in soon.
I've had sore throats before but this one is the worst I've ever had. It hurts like REALLY bad when I swallow. (Inb4 *** joke)
Any help is appreciated
This x 1,000,000A bit of advice.
Take all of the antibiotics. I mean all of them for the course you are directed. Don't stop taking them when you feel better just to hold onto them for your next sore throat. Part of the reason we have antibiotic resistant bacteria is because people don't complete their courses of antibiotics. Some of these bugs are getting very hard to treat, we have a couple of patients where I work with VRE and Staph that are now almost completely resistant to almost all antibiotics. Bacteria are perfect examples of how evolution works. When you take antibiotics the drugs kill off the easily killed bacteria first. It takes longer to kill the resistant bacteria.
If you stop taking the antibiotics the bacteria that remain are now more resistant to the drug and they start to mulitply. Go this route enough times and you find bacteria that will laugh at the drugs you are taking. Case in point the amoxicillin you had left over. It is used less and less these days because streptococcus has developed a resistance to it. And strep can cause more than just a sore throat. If allowed to continue it can go systemic and cause heart valve disease and other organ dysfunction. It used to be called scarlet fever and it killed a lot of people before the invention of antibiotics.
Yes I know! Thanks. The only reason I had extra Antibiotics was from the last time I was sick, the ones prescribed weren't working so she gave me something stronger, so I never finished the weaker onesA bit of advice.
