so the argument is that because friedman has never worked with a big market he wont know how to manage the team and money?

i guess i could see that...

but he is one of the best if not the best in developing prospects and truly "building" a team

Could be argued that in addition to good evaluation of talent, he's also been extremely lucky. But baseball being baseball, a little luck goes a long way.

No question Friedman has done great things with the resources he has in Tampa. I just think he'd be a bit of a gamble in Chicago. The Cubs should go for a proven winner in a big market. Winning through building the farm system is great and I applaud that in the long run, but it's been 103 years. Obviously there's no quick fix, but a guy like Epstein who has done well in free agency could get the Cubs a World Series in the next few years, while also building up the farm. It's a win-win IMO.

My only thing is that people are too hung up on Friedman and Epstein...won't be surprised if an unknown GM/Asst. GM gets the job.

Considering that they are the two most likely candidates, I don't think that's really a problem. Plus Ricketts has said he wants a proven winner, which makes them obvious candidates.

This amused me. Not because you're wrong, but just...y'know :D

Why do you think that? The Cubs seem to be reaching out to him and the Red Sox didn't shoot the Cubs down right away...

Not saying you're wrong, you're probably right but just wanted to know your reasons...

He doesn't think it will happen because the Red Sox would be crazy to let epstein go. It looks like there is at least a chance it happens. Would be such a great signing, I definitely see Terry F heading this way to if that happens.

I'm not sure I want to get him based on how Boston seems to want a really good player in exchange...

Rumor du jour is that the Red Sox would want the Cubs to take on John Lackey in addition to getting Epstein.

One thing that might make sense for is Lackey for Soriano. Both go through 2014

I agree 100% Epstein would be the best "win now/build for the future" candidate.

The Red Sawx have made some really nice signings and also drafted some nice young players while on Epstein's watch.
