Yup..Charlotte is a great city..One of the finest Ive ever been in
I've had some terrible experiences flying in and out of the airport there though...though I was probably just super unlikely both times. City itself seemed pretty nice from what I could gather during my one night unexpected stay. :dunno:

Never been to the airport, so I cant say..But the city is a young persons dream, as well as a financial hub...Jobs are plentiful and good paying ..Its expanding like crazy. The weather is nice. Lots of entertainment as well

Phoenix doesn't get too hot in spite of the temperatures you see there. No humidity makes a huge difference. I was there in the middle of summer in 110 degree weather and felt fine. This was probably mentioned somewhere earlier. But yeah, it's a pretty solid place overall, plus you get In n Out if you're into that.

Seattle is an interesting city...hipster central imo. Lots of grayness, though it may not really rain as much as you'd think. Weather is pretty static from what I was told. I went there in January for an interview and it wasn't really that cold. City itself is pretty nice...had a friend take me around all the downtown area. Cost of living there is slightly higher than Chicago though I think due to the huge companies headquartered there. If you can stomach that though, it's pretty good. I think you'd like it...for whatever reason.

Plane broke down both times. Was on a connecting flight to Richmond and my flights both ways out of Charlotte got cancelled. Almost missed an interview and I wasted a bus ticket on the way back because of the delay. Again, probably just terrible luck on my part.

that's true. after living in nm anything is humid to me. I hate humidity but have lived in it except for those 3 years

I was in Orlando last summer, and the humid there was unbearable for me. The first day there I literally took 4 showers during a 24 hour period. When I got back to California, it was 105 degrees dry heat, and I'd take that any day over 90 degrees humid.

Seattle no..same as Portland IMO

Portland is full of all the folks that could no longer afford Seattle, so they are slowly becoming two very different cities. I spent a good chunk of time in Seattle and I always said that if I was going to go back that far north...I will just defect to Canada.

Partial to that high plains desert myself. I really like northern Arizona/New Mexico and southern Colorado pocket of the country. That is my retirement plan.

we vacationed in new orleans in july which was expectedly brutal, but flying back they routed us through daytona beach with a 4 hour layover and we went outside. I was ready to die.

I cant stand the dreariness of Seattle, If its not raining then its overcast and about to rain. The city is nice as far as things to do though.

Given your choices I would look to Arizona or Denver. Personally I would have warm coastal or island areas on my list though.

Phoenix is hell. A hot, concrete pad of cement. It's dirty, terrible water, and lots of crime.

Tucson is where it's at, especially if you don't want to live in a strip mall!

Hi everyone,

I could really use some relocation advice. After seven years of high taxes, annoying people (east coast is wow:wacko:), and bad food, the wife and I are ready to get out of New Jersey.

Some things to consider: Chicago is my hometown, and I miss it. I haven't lived there in 20+ years though. My only real concern is the long, frigid winters. Call me a wuss, but I'm not a fan of six months of subzero temps and snow at this point in my life. I love Chicago in the summer and fall though.

Comfortable weather, reasonable cost of living (low property tax), and close proximity to a major city (development in the suburbs) with housing in the $250,000 to $350,000 range is preferable. We're not interested in locations on the east coast, mid-atlantic or southeast regions. California would be great, but housing and taxes there are insanely high. Texas is too humid.

The areas we've considered so far are Chicago, Arizona, Seattle, Denver, and Portland. All comments are welcome, thanks in advance. :)

Just go with San Diego brother. I know its expensive but the people are happy. I think San Diego is about as close to perfection as can be had. Will be out there in 2015 if all goes according to plan.

Is Arizona dry heat or humid?...I was always led to believe that it was dry heat, which lured asthmatic people to move there.

If the OP doesn't like Chicago winters, isn't Denver's winters worse?

From what I've been told, there's not much sunshine on Seattle.

Out of the OP's choices, I think that I'd take a shot at Portland. With that said, Jim Johnson just nailed it above....San Diego is the place to be.

What about areas outside the city. I've been told a lot of Chicago transplants live there and love it. I might consider places farther north, like Flagstaff. Just not too sure how comfortable I would be living far from a city (off the grid :)).
