From Muskat's blurb:

http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2012/11/26/1126-deer-added-to-sveums-staff/

How can Deer be a hitting instructor when he has such a low batting average and struck out so many times?

“I answer that a lot,” Deer told Milwaukee sportswriter Drew Olson in a 2006 interview. “I don’t teach the way I hit. I understand how to hit .300. I know what it takes. We tell the guys to be selectively aggressive. We want that to be their approach. We tell them, ‘Be patiently aggressive.’ That’s our motto. What does it mean? If you get a good pitch to hit and you take it, that’s your fault. We don’t ever want to take aggressiveness away. But, we don’t want to swing at bad pitches either. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t want them to hit like I did.”

I like that answer.

Someone needs to get dumped off the 40-man then.

Brett wrote about how the Cubs were in on Keppinger before that silly leg injury.

If so then that makes Ian Stewart a logical non-tender and would mean Stewart doesn't remain with the team. A Stewart non-tender would also take care of the 40-man roster issue with the Feldman signing. If they waited until spring training to kick the tires on Keppinger then they could probably clear a few more spots by then since not every player has to be protected once Rule 5 is over.

The Cubs, Diamondbacks and Rays are bidding for free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger even though he broke his leg, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (Twitter links). The 32-year-old recently broke his right fibula, but hopes to be ready for action by mid-January. Clubs don’t consider the injury serious enough to stop pursuing Keppinger.

Probably bad news for Valbuena and Stewart though at least one of them will need to stick around just in case Keppinger (or whoever the Cubs acquire) isn't ready for spring training.

Hmmm. They haven't announced the corresponding roster move yet. Muskat said she would find out and flaked :fist:

Either that or the Cubs are allowed to carry 41 until tomorrow.

Again have to wonder what the guarantee to play for a contending team via trade effect plays out in negotiating

I think Bourn is probably going to be more expensive than BJ Upton. He's older too and has less power. Even if the Cubs were serious though it wouldn't be a sign-to-be-traded-later deal because that kind of mega-deal is not so easily moved. But since the Cubs have a financial advantage it would be a really out of the box way to acquire prospects in trade by paying Michael Bourn to play somewhere else

Cubs officials have yet to confirm or comment on reports of their signing of Japanese closer Kyuji Fujikawa, writes Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. The Cubs, however, are willing to talk about their need for a third baseman, an outfielder, and pitching depth. Muskat adds the Cubs could re-sign third baseman Ian Stewart after non-tendering him on Friday.
