Okay.. I'm sticking with my point because the Cubs are doing the right think. They've tried it before and it didn't work, now to a different strategy. End of story.

I think he's right only if the entire organization weren't festering before the new guys came on board. Yeah, it's nice to spend on a few big names, but that's a hell of an expensive 80-win team.

Wait. I think I changed my mind. Which of you thinks they should spend money on whoever b/c big markets don't rebuild they just outspend their problems?

This.

And I'd much rather wait it out now and gamble on a perennial contender than go for it and take a year by year approach, hoping for the best.

The Cubs will spend when the time is right and it's not right now. We could possibly see one next off-season, depending on the improvement of the minors.

Too bad there's no one out there that will be willing to spend on.

I tried to follow the conversation and my eyes crossed  I think it's the same going in circles that we've had with D3A in the past.

Here's my question, is he trolling, does he think he's trolling, or is that what he actually believes? Because I can't tell.

The Cubs certainly have the capability to spend on both minors and majors. The problem is that they've never actually done both at the same time except for that brief stint when Dallas Green tried to fix things. With certain franchise (Pirates, A's, Rays, Royals) they can only afford to spend on drafting and occasionally they will extend a guy on a splurge. With other teams (Mets, Marlins) they spend out the wazoo and then they're completely fucked because everyone breaks and there aren't enough guys in the minors to come in and pick up the slack. I think the way the Yankees (earlier on) and Red Sox did things was great. They kept investing in the minors and made good free agent investments until A-Rod and Theo's recent fails. That's what you would like the Cubs to do.

Given the lack of depth in the free agent pool it's not surprising to me that the Cubs didn't pick this year to go for it. It might not even be next year. That really depends on how they see things, and how they see things is probably way different from how we as fans see things.

ahhhhh ok. Then I agree w/ you. mb.

Sweet. I told him he's in the minority of what he thinks... so whatever he says, no one really agrees with him. 75% of fans or more like what the Cubvs are doing and think they're doing right.

The thing is that they have only been in charge for a little over a year and any judgment on them, positive or otherwise, is likely premature. We won't have an idea of what was the right thing to do until way later.

Muskat notes on Garza and Stewart:

The offseason is going well for Matt Garza and Ian Stewart. Garza, shut down after 18 starts because of an elbow problem, started throwing on Monday, and happily announced his progress. The Cubs pitcher tweeted: “1st day throwing the baseball! Felt great, #keepitslow! Looking forward to day#2 #GoCubsGo”

Meanwhile, Stewart is taking his offseason workouts to another level. He’s working this week with Hall of Famer Rod Carew, and tweeted on Monday: “Wrist is good, no pain when I swing.” Stewart needed wrist surgery, and had to be shut down. He has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Cubs, which has yet to be officially announced.

Muskat says the Cubs just claimed Sandy Rosario. Good peripherals in the minors but in limited action in Miami he got totally rocked.
