Hendry might be the scouting influence that is causing the Yanks to get interested, but I don't see why he'd be a big deal as to why Dempster would approve of a trade there. Rothschild makes a lot of sense. he knows Demp well enough that he might be able to keep him up to snuff in the AL East after adjustments and the like.

Levine said he would go to Rangers as well as the Yankees and Dodgers. Joel Sherman who is really plugged in on the Yankees says that the Yanks are interested in taking on money and not give up spects. Should be noted that this was him speculating, but he is usually correct about things Yankees.

I'm kind of thinking about Banuelos. He wouldn't go in a deal if he wasn't hurt, but this could be a situation like Vizcaino where the Cubs buy low on a guy but get upside if they come back strong.

Yanks have been on the record as stating they want to reduce their payroll below $185M in the next couple of years. They also want to keep this year's payroll below $200M, and they are wickedly close to that now. Young Steinbrenner is more concerned about the bottom line and the MLB luxury tax than he is with keeping the top of the line roster.

It didn't make sense everyone in the world knows, well I guess almost everyone, that the Cubs will eat money to get talent. But I knew Sherman was a solid source for NY baseball stuff.

Well, from what I've gathered on that... the Cubs are willing to eat salary if the prospect gain is right. Dempster should still be making something like $5.5 - 6M for the rest of this season. If the Cubs eat $4M of that, I'd suspect they're going to want a substantial spec back. The Yanks seem inclined to trade little, but get Dempster for essentially free in the process. As of right now, the Yanks sit at $198M in payroll... that's a cushion of $2M to keep under the $200M level that Steinbrenner set for Cashman. Unless the Yanks pony up with a substantial spec, I can see why they'd be worried about the cash.

The first thirty seconds is going to be the most interesting part of the Cubs game to see the reaction he gets. I think it has been numbed somewhat by getting Vizcaino from the Braves, but will be interesting to see.
