The Dempster-to-the Dodgers trade isn't "dead," tweets ESPN's Jayson Stark, though the Dodgers are interested in Josh Johnson and are "waiting to see if [the] price drops on" James Shields.

I've seen multiple tweets that have said basically the same thing about the Marlins asking price for Josh Johnson, and that is open up Baseball America and the top two or three prospects from each club.

Kaplan's latest on the situation with Dempster. Seems to paint the picture of strongly preferring to go to the Dodgers and basically hold out hoping that they would up their offer, but willing to go elsewhere once it gets closer to the deadline. http://www.csnchicago.com/baseball-chicago-cubs/cubs-talk/Dempster-may-be-willing-to-look-at-other?blockID=747397&feedID=10336&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

Nightengale is saying that the Rangers and Marlins are in heavy talks for Josh Johnson.

I don't think he's an attention whore...I think he just fucked up with what he said earlier...and instead of apologizing, he just back-tracked. Still a dick move...but I don't think he's doing it b/c he wants to see his name in the papers.

Here's a thought can the Cubs make a deal for Dempster right before the deadline at all? Basically does everything have to be accepted and ready to go by the deadline or can they submit a deal at the deadline and Dempster spend a day or two thinking about it since that is so important to him.

I think he basically has until the deadline and if he doesn't say yes and they don't submit the paperwork, that's it. I am not completely sure of that, but the deadline is pretty clear.

Yeah that is kind of what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure. That certainly makes a difference on the amount of time they have to make a deal.

I'm sure they'll have those Nextel walkie-talkies set up and Dempster will be in constant communication now, which they probably should have done before if they didn't  Dempster needs to have his phone ring tone up so high that it'll wake him from any nap :D

Depending on where guys like Josh Johnson and James Shields go, this may be good for the Cubs after all. Maybe. Who the hell knows anymore

Ooh, I love relievers

That's about what I had originally thought Dempster was worth in trade anyway. The Cubs really did pull a rabbit out of thin air to get the Braves to give up Delgado. Too bad.

I hope they take it back to Dempster and say, "see...this is how you're dicking us over. But there's still time..."

They do have to approach it somewhat diplomatically or else Dempster might refuse it too

In the meantime, how about you guys help me root for the Giants so the Dodgers will be more likely to panic? :woot:

Update suggests the Lindblom rumor is unfounded.

The trade papers have to be filed with the MLB offices by the deadline. This means everything must be done.
