1:09pm: The Nationals have positioned themselves as the perfect fallback option for the Cubs on Dempster, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark. It's unknown whether Dempster would approve a trade to the Nats.

Scott Miller is saying Cubs-Dodgers is gaining steam. The truth is that the Dodgers do need an arm and aren't really in position to get anyone but Dempster at this point. It will be interesting to see who caves first to make it happen.

@JimBowdenESPNxm If Cubs call Braves w/ same Dempster deal & have a signed doc from Demp approving it....it could still get done

Gammons was on earlier and said that he thinks the Cubs will deal Dempster to the Dodgers. But his line of reasoning wasn't the most hopeful for the Cubs. Basically that the Dodgers don't have anyone besides a few pitchers and the Cubs have to deal him to Dodgers. So a deal will get done but don't look for much for the Cubs. Only interesting thing he said was that the Cubs prefer Webster to Lee according to him.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal

Source: #Cubs "trying to bend over backwards" to get Dempster to #Dodgers, his desired team. Talks continue.

Holdup in Dempster talks remains quality of prospects #Cubs would receive from #Dodgers. Want actual talent back.

Not gonna happen....

Cubs still have the qualifying offer to fall back on. Dodgers don't really need Dempster but it would be nice. There's a good chance Dempster stays. There's also a good chance the Dodgers freak out and give the Cubs what they want despite now being tied for the NL West lead. The best case scenario would have been for the Giants to sweep the Dodgers this past weekend, but oh well.

If he does start tomorrow, I sure do hope Dempster gets booed. I thought I never will say that, but he's screwing the Cubs.

With Josh Johnson probably not on the market. the pricetag for James Shields hefty, Cliff Lee as well...the only real choice is Dempster. I think the Cubs know this. That all flies out of the window, though, if the Cubs are hell bent on getting rid of Dempster. But there's some leverage here. The Dodgers would derive more use out of Dempster than the Cubs would for the remainder of the season.

Here's hoping.

That wouldn't be all Dempster's fault (a lot of it, but not all). There's little reason to just trade him if they're just going to get crap back.

Yeah I wouldn't trade him to just trade him. I would be fin with that IF there was no good offer. But since there was, I'm really pissed at him. Maybe Delgado isn't the best pitcher, but it's still a hell of an offer for a 1-year rental for Dempster.

I don't think the Phils actually want to move Lee. They are just going through the motions to see what they might be able to get for him. Johnson, Hamels, and Garza off the market. TB looking for a better haul for Shields than they got for Garza, and teams already leery about dealing with TB after that trade went down. Wandy, Sanchez, and Greinke already traded. Dempster really does become the best overall target. I'd think it's a safe bet that the Braves' offer is probably still on the table to some degree, even if it's now just Delgado... and not the previous Delgado plus. Washington now seems to be in the mix too. Also, it seems daily that we are seeing something like "more teams are inquiring about Dempster" or the like. You'd think this would start to give the Cubs more leverage, though Dempster still holds the trump card and has already used it once.

Question is, would it be possible for Dempster to make it through waivers for a waiver trade? I don't think Garza would, but he's cheaper, younger, and has more team control. He also doesn't have veto rights.
