If a goalie doesn't want to get hit, he should just stay in the crease.

Sure, but the rules say otherwise. The NHL even restricted where a goalie can go more so with the trapezoid. If Crawford went behind the net, like 99% of the goalies do to play a puck, and got railed...I don't think anyone here would be that thrilled or say that goalies shouldn't go out of their crease.

Im fine with it just being 2 mins...a major, game misconduct, and now a meeting is ludicrous

Shaw was leaning toward the boards, away from Smith, in an attempt to not hit him. There was no raising of a shoulder or throwing of an elbow in any manner. Shaw could've very easily "fucked Smith up." He chose not to.

A major and a game misconduct was punishment enough.

I watched the video clip a few times- and Dmelt summed it up pretty well. If Shaw wanted to he could have really dropped the shoulder -well, it wouldn't have been acting - but -there are few guys out there that are -that- classless.

Which is the other thing -- (I haen't stayed up on the rules as well as I should) - but the trapazoid, as is my understanding, is the goalie's safe area -so even going back there when the goalie is making a play on the puck... well, bad things happen for your team in those situations.

:/ Whatever happens, hopefully it assists the rookie to get his head out of his rectum --- even the possibility of putting yourself in the position to have to kill off a major penalty when you didn't have to -is just plain stupid (even more stupid when your offense can be suspect at times)... in short the Hawks got lucky to even the series -- but luck still counts.

Ah, right --- as I said, it had been a long time (they don't have regular rules updates here) I must have been thinking of how they reshaped the crease or something.

Actually I should have known that about the trapzoid thing- as I kept getting minors on the goalie in NHL whatever it was -when playing manual goalie (and not knowing what the hell I was doing as goalie).... for just that ... moving outside of the crease -even when all of a sudden the goalie became the active player... duh me.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, center Martin Hanzal and left wing Lauri Korpikoski did not practice with the team on Monday.

Of course, but I'm fully expecting to see Smith play in the game.

I thought I read that Tippett responded to a reporter that "there are no injuries to talk about, Smith is 100%" or something like that. So Smith not practicing confuses me a little.

Yeah and Smith said the same thing right after the game... "100%"

Agreed...but I would do a Shaw for Smith trade off any day of the week.

HW- you're scaring me now ... I've read you enough to know that you're not actually coming at it from this perspective - but another way to read this is - that in a more perfect world -Frolik would run goalies. No big loss to the Hawks (a lot less of one than Shaw). :smoke:

haha, correct. Obviously the situation is unfortunate for all parties...but if that's the way it is going to play out, then that's fine. Especially with Shanahan putting, in my opinion, WAY too much weight into injuries when deciding on a suspension.

Such bullshit. An injury is luck of the draw a lot of times. Some goalies would be out cold and some would be up and swinging at Shaw. To decide a suspension based on injury is just ridiculous.

Emery probably would be I imagine... as would have Belfour, Hextall, and possibly Billy Smith (although Smith might have swung at him before he touched the puck iirc)...

I reserved judgement on Shanahan throughout the season, but I have come to the determination that he's a putz- and they ought to have some ex-referee doing that job ... someone with at least an inkling about the concept of consistency. What's Kerry Fraser doing these days?

The problem seems to run deeper than Shanahan.

ie: I can't imagine Shanahan caring if a star player gets suspended... but that player's GM? That's a different story.
