You know what (I think ) Bobby Hull (might have been Don Cherry) used to say - if you have no chance of scoring- whistle one by their head - or take a shot at the berries... it gets goalies' attention.

...can't go near Sir Laurence Olivier ... but then again I'd like to see Shanahan suspend the puck.

(He might try though knowing him.... complete joke -- get rid of him, put a retired ref in the position - easy solution.).

If you think Shanahan is biased, oh boy, the last person I want to see in that position is McCreary. I think he might have been a young referee when Lysiak pulled his stunt and he's never let the Hawks live that one down.

At least can we agree that the next time Shanahan lets someone off the hook (in this case Weber)... we all shut the hell up about it?

Anytime there is any play that is the slightest shade of grey, everyone is asking "so how many games is that??". Remember when suspensions were kind of a big deal? When they were reserved for really heinous shit... things were better like that.

The reason why there seems to be "how many games will he get" talk following just about every night of NHL action is because the NHL is a rough league. Whether intentional or accidental... rough stuff happens on the ice and people get hurt.

Lay off the fucking suspensions. It helps nothing.

Do you mean let the players police themselves?

 we saw how well that went in the Philly game this weekend.

Nah, just call the penalties as they need to be called on the ice. I'm too lazy to dig it up again, but I posted a link not long ago showing how few penalties were called this year. They were way down this year- even lower than before the lockout.

Call them properly on the ice and if something goes above and beyond- review it for suspension.

The Weber thing? That was bad because it happened at the end of a game. If that happened in the middle of the game, you give him 5 and a game and that's that.

The Carkner thing? That type of play happens every time a star player gets dropped with a clean hit. Big guy runs a star player and some meat head immediately charges over and jumps him. Hell, remember when Mayers got leveled by Reaves and Bolig flew right in and jumped Reaves? That's all the Carkner beatdown on Boyle was. Boyle fucked with Karlsson in game 1 and Carkner was on the ice in game 2 to get payback. Boyle punked out and refused so Carkner jumped him to get his payback. 5 minute penalty+game... that's enough.

I was thinking of a ref- not McCreary who is a joke -- someone like Kerry Fraser.

Just playing devil's advocate here ... but maybe all of the headshots and other bullshit has gotten completely out of control and suspensions are just being handed out as these things keep happening?

any shot to the head deserves a suspension. some are very weak like the shaw suspension. the torres shot is a suspension and should be, the cross check to the throat of schenn, shit like that should grant a suspension and not fall into the category of "rough stuff happens on the ice and people get hurt" category.

Not any shot to the head. There are incidental hits to the head that don't deserve suspensions. It's a fast game and accidents happen.

Also, that cross check to Schenn was to his chest- not his throat- and it was followed by a punch to the back of the head. It got Asham a 4 game suspension. 1 more than Shaw.

Obviously there are degrees of actions and the stupider shit deserves a look. It always has. The really heinous, completely unnecessary shit... like Asham's hit and punch. But the constant calling for suspensions for borderline hits? I can do without that. The only thing that will take that out of the game is to take hitting out. The game is too fast to take out all hits to the head.

still way too close to the throat, way too close.

malicious intent hence leaving your feet in good enough for a suspension especially from players like torres, carcillo etc. its quite clear on video replays on what is accidental and what isnt.
