The strength of this suspension comes from a few places:
-Lucic's hit on Miller. Lucic got nothing for a much worse hit. That was a mistake by Shanahan and Shaw is paying the price for it.
-Shaw's an easy target. He's not Shea Weber.
-The shenanigans played by Smith and the Coyotes. Throwing the equipment, rolling around on the ice, missing a practice, and avoiding the press. It's all posturing done by the Coyotes in hopes that they can get Shaw suspended without technically lying and saying Smith is hurt. Smith WILL be in net tonight. You know it.
-The Penguins/Flyers game 3. First off, I'd blame the refs 110% for letting that game get out of hand. They fucked up immensely by not taking control of that game early in the 1st period. Everyone and every sports tv show is talking about the violence in this game. Fans of hockey like it, but to non-fans, it looks completely ridiculous and a bit embarrassing. It was a shit show and so was the Rangers/Senators game to an extent. Shanahan feels the need to get control of the playoffs. A stiff suspension to Shaw is part of that.
-Last but not least- Weber's face slam. Once again, Shanahan dropped the ball on this one and it surprised/outraged a bunch of people. If he let Shaw off, some of those people would be pointing at that hit and saying "you can slam faces in to the glass and now run goalies all you want!".
