Maybe Doug Wilson as well...stats as a Hawk

938gms - 225g - 554a - 779 pts ...won a Norris, 7 time All-Star

But wait, he's been in SJ front office for about 10yrs now...and signed Hjarllmarsson to and offer sheet, took Niemi on a bargain....so maybe not jersey retirement material.

Steve Larmer as a Hawk -

891gms - 406g - 517a - 923pts ...iron man streak, 2 time Allstar, Calder winner

Completely different conversation. Chelios did it as a player, of which is the reason he'll go to the HOF. Wilson's managerial experience has nothing to do with his playing career as jersey retirement conversations go. Personally I don't think Larmer or Wilson are worthy of Jersey retirement. Nor was Maggie, other than the tragic way in which he left this world.

Takes an aweful lot to hang a banner containing a players number IMO.

Chelios definitely has the credentials, but for another team. Not the Chicago Blackhawks.

Which is why I personally do not think that a number should be retired for the 'Hawks any time soon...

No Larmer? Really? Really? If it wasn't for that ass clown Keenan he may have finished his career in Chicago and had a shot at 500 goals. Larmer is #1 for having his jersey retired. CHelios not even on the radar.

In my opinion, Larmer wasn't prolific enough as a winger despite playing his entire prime with one of the better playmakers of the 1980s. He was consistent, he was a solid two-way player, but there was a rather large crowd of players putting up 80-point seasons in the 80s. If he could have helped the Hawks win a cup and go on to play maybe 1200 or so games for the team, his jersey probably deserves to go up there. But, he didn't.

Hockey-reference.com has adjusted stats for every player that attempt to take into consideration the era in which the player played. When you compare Larmer's five best seasons with the team to Tony Amonte's, these are the results:

Larmer: 90, 75, 74, 72, 72

Amonte: 91, 86, 83, 79, 75

Bobby Hull mopped the floor with the league. Stan Mikita won scoring titles and Hart Trophies. Pierre Pilote racked up Norris trophies and 1st team All-star selections. Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito had thirteen 1st or 2nd team All-Star selctions between them as Hawks. Larmer isn't in the same stratosphere.

Like I said there probably isn't a player now that's on the jersey retirement list.

I would think he's the closest, but still not there. And he's my favorite Hawk.

I brought up Wilson working for SJ...because some people crying that Chelios working for the Wings should have some impact on whether he deserves to have his jersey retired.

I actually think Doug Wilson was highly under-rated in his time. He had close to 40 goals one year...but he played in an era with some great/legendary Dmen.

Ahh yes, the "honorable mention" category.... In other words, when the arena is filled with banners galore, this is the next best option... for those who are worthy to mention, but due to "technicalities", they don't get banners...

Don't give the front office any ideas...

Unlike Toronto, Vancouver has the ceiling space to go around.

Vancouver has a wall of fame/honour with past players on it. Ironically(or not) it is located between the largest men's ans women's washrooms in the arena.

Larmer's number should be retired. Let's hope we have the same discussion with Kane/Toews when their careers are over, but Larmer/Savard go hand-in-hand. Without the other, I don't think either has quite the career they did. That being said both were different, but phenomenal talents that electrified Hawk fans for years. Statistically the numbers are so close.

I think Doug Wilson deserves his number hanging from the rafters as well. He has some of the best numbers of any defenseman in team history. That move should have been a no-brainer.

And, as for Chelios, as unpopular as it may be, he has several of the top ten season's ever for a Blackhawk d-man. The real argument there is can people move past their hatred (for those that have it) towards him. I just don't think his numbers in Det. get his number retired there, despite the Cups; and there's an argument for his MTL tenure deserving MTL retiring him.

In my order of preference I'd like to see Doug Wilson and Steve Larmer get consideration before any of JR, Chelios, etc...

  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Fire

  1. Chicago Blackhawks
There are no ex-players deserving of number retirement. Once Larmer makes the HOF, we'll talk.
