Congrats on Black Panther for winning a SAG award. I don't see them winning the Oscars obviously, but the Oscars is wide open this year. I still think Green Book takes it

Minding the Gap lost. Damn.

They got a shout out on local ABC WLS news tonight, that counts for something.

I mean, I'd rather Black Panther win than Roma. I don't get the fascination with that movie. It's ok to me. Why are people trashing Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody? I thought those 2 movies were pretty good too.

I read where Green Book was inaccurate. According to real family members....there was never a "friendship" between the driver and the pianist.
It was all strictly business ( i.e. employer / employee).

"My brother never considered Tony to be his “friend”; he was an employee, his chauffeur (who resented wearing a uniform and cap). This is why context and nuance are so important. The fact that a successful, well-to-do Black artist would employ domestics that did NOT look like him, should not be lost in translation."

"My brother NEVER had a teal blue Cadillac, it was always a black limousine."

-Maurice E. Shirley, brother of Dr. Donald W. Shirley

Here's more in the article:The family members of Don Shirley, the Jamaican-American pianist depicted in the movie The Green Book, has issued a strong condemnation of the film which is based on events in Shirley’s life.

I see Spike Lee was classless in losing Best Picture.

He actually thinks Black Klansman should have won, and publicly ripped the Academy's decision.

I think Spike is very good, but he gave an incoherent, rambling speech after winning for adapted screenplay, and then threw a fit for losing. That's classless.

Think it was more that Green Book won and the racial politics of that film. Story is supposed to be about Shirley but told from perspective of his white chaffeur. Family says the movie is filled with inaccuracies which makes sense when you only have the perspective of the white dude's son. Also odd that they put Viggo up for Best Actor but Ali for best supporting so in essence they relegated the black dude as support in a movie ostensibly about him.

So I think Spike's beef was they gave award to a film that pretends to tackle racial issues and does so in a way that marginalizes what should have been the black lead character. Think he would not have been as upset if another film had won.

I don't follow these awards much, but I was kind of floored to hear that this was the seventh time Glenn Close was snubbed for the win.

Makes her a candidate to be an honorary recipient at some point doesn't it?

Sorry for your friend. Honor to be nominated?

It was awesome to see them nominated and get all the recognition they have been getting. He was on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah as well. He's working on a few more docs that are similar. One of them has to do with teens growing up in the gun violence of Chicago.

I wondered about this to.

Yes I spoke about this in post#48 below. Very strange & irreverent the ppl. making Green Book would not consult with Don Shirley's family

As for Spike Lee, his “BlacKkKlansman” movie ( which I saw).....it was very the premise of a guy speaking on the phone to racist then sending a guy to infiltrate the group with a different voice seemed very unbelievable. Strange no one questioned the 2 different voices. No Lee should not be upset about losing 'best picture'....“BlacKkKlansman” was average at best.

The Trib and LA Times articles were helpful

I haven't seen it yet (my son loved it), but I agree that it is odd to have seen the Best Actor and best Supporting Actor split like that.

Black Panther was inaccurate also, there really are no costumed superheroes saving the planet.
