Thinking about the past winners... it's incredible that Silence of the Lambs won best picture. No way that wins with today's set criteria.

True. An actor has to follow script. I guess he could have refused to act in the movie. Highly doubt that a B list actor would refuse that high profile of a role though which could advance his career exponentially.

It will advance his career, especially since he won an award for it.

The writer dude already has 3 new projects for writing and directing. He has made some bad films in the past, and owes a lot to Farrelly, Ali, and Viggo.

Saw the movie and thought it was a good movie for what it was. It was the story of a trip through the south with a black musical genius told from the pov of the white driver. I think the people complaining abt the movie are complaining bc they are not surprised that another "white savior" type movie is going to win. Also, many people from Dr. Shirley's family are saying this is not exactly how the story went.

Having said all that, I don't think the Academy ever said what the requirements are to win an award...so if they want to give Green Book the award, it's up to them. They can choose however they want.

I never set out to learn anything significant from the movie, so I was just entertained. It didn't move me to tears or anything like that. It was just a feel good movie just like Instant Family. Also am a big fan of Ali

Good points on "the white savior type of movie" perception.

Just to add.

Some ppl. saw this as "Driving Miss Daisy" type movie in reverse. Others see it as another movie where blacks were once again, looking for acceptance by whites through "friendship" and trying to show that "we're just like you, we're not bad ppl-type" of scenario.

Fact is the family of Don Shirley said there was no deep"friendship". At the end of day, the driver was viewed as an employee ( according to Shirley's family), who, IMO, probably never changed his views on blacks or any other group .

Agreed.

Although it was a fine gesture......
my point was Mahershala Ali had nothing to be ashamed of and should not have felt the need to apologize to Don Shirley's family for any inaccurate portrayal. Or the way the movie was written by Nick Vallelonga

It was not a high profile role and Ali already has an academy award for best supporting actor in a film that won best picture. He already had 9 nominations for awards at the 5 major awards shows prior to Green Book with Green Book bringing his total up to 13. In short, the movie needed him more than he needed the movie. He is easily one of the best actors today just not a dude that stars in big Hollywood blockbusters. This was the case of two great actors elevating the material not the movie being high profile on its own.

Side note:
Green Book Writers Nick Vallelonga & Brian Hayes Currie should've been the ones apologizing for not consulting with the Shirley family on accuracy issues.
