Blocking shots doesn't always mean you're a good defender.

amar'e has blocked over 2 per game once... Al Jefferson was near 2.. others as well.... and they are NOT good defenders.

True...but I would take it to mean that they're not entirely useless either. Unless their defense is Larry Hughes style where all they do is try to shoot the passing lanes (or whatever the blocking equivalent is), it means they're at least decent defensively.

To me, taller players blocking shots isn't impressive. A guy that's near 7 feet should be able to have more than a block per game.... especially since most of those blocks come against guards running in for a lay-up.

idk.. to me, the best defenders do things that don't show up on the stat sheet. u know?

Yeah I can see what you mean. Shane Battier is a great defender and he doesn't always get the stats (he got over a block per game last year though if I recall). Bruce Bowen is another. I agree that 7 foot centers should be able to get over a block per game, but a 6'8" SF would generally not be able to. Guys of that height normally get more steals and such. So when a guy like Shawn Marion averaged over a block per game (maybe almost 2 in his prime, but I don't remember) and over a steal per game, I figured he'd be a great defender, and I would tend to think that Marion is a pretty darn good defender. A really good defender does it all, but good defenders usually can get at least one of those stats (steals/blocks). It's not always the case, but generally 1+ spg or 1+ bpg = good defender in some aspect.

From watching him, Wilson Chandler is a decent on-ball defender. Far from Bowen or Battier... but decent. His help-side defense is great and that's why he is able to get all of those blocks. If he was guarding a bad shooter, or slide over to help out, he can easily get a block because of his combo of length and athleticism.

Offensively, he's not much more than an open-floor shooter. But that is something the Bulls could use more of.

Wilson Chandler would just be a solid kind of all around player to have. His weak side defense is, as you said, great, and that would work pretty well in Thibs' defense system. And I'm sure any on ball deficiencies that he has could be corrected over the course of the season. Offensively, he's far from what we need, but he could do nothing but help.
