I know some folks can't divulge their sources, but those words are indicative of speculation or at least hearsay.

Not if he heard it from good sources or people involve in the negotiations.

I think just saying "I heard" without qualifying it with "a source speaking on the condition of anonymity" or some such is just pulling stuff out of the air. I tend to disregard those statements.

What makes it good? And why do people need someone else to read between the lines for them?

It's good for people who are new to the topic, and also good as a guideline for what teams like the Cubs have to refute in order to keep Fielder's asking price and eventual contract lower.

The following are my points of view...Pujols is getting slightly more than Ryan Howard per year, but he's much better and the Howard contract was stupid to begin with. Prince Fielder is somewhere in between and smart teams will know that he's not worth that much. It's sort of like arguing in arbitration, except the bidding team is going to have to be a bit more diplomatic in explaining why they won't offer as much as Boras is going to ask for. Now a fun game would be thinking about how the Cubs would say in a nice way "Prince is too fat and sucks at defense even though we like his bat" so that Boras doesn't say "**** you guys" and goes elsewhere

It's be nice to have Prince, but I just liked this article because they summarized in the context of Boras statements why it's not the best idea to overpay for him.

I dont think anyone really ever thought Fielder would sign a 3 year deal. The bigger question is whether or not this will be his last big contract or whether its short enough to allow him to get another good/decent contract.

Sorry but a lot of that analysis was kind of silly.

I think whoever signs Fielder will have to give at least seven years. Boras would almost dictate it and probably won't even talk to anyone who would try to shortchange on years.

after pujols signed for what he did, fielder wont be getting any less than 7 years.

I see Texas making a huge push on fielder now that they lost cj wilson and have pujols in their division.

Yeah, there's no way they're letting Mitch Moreland be their everyday 1B. They'd sooner make Napoli the 1B than Moreland, but I think they'd want to keep Napoli at C for the time being to keep their lineup as offensively charged as possible. I don't think Pujols makes the Angels lineup better than the Rangers' overall, however, and I don't think the Rangers will panic and overpay for Fielder.

If Fielder is overpaid it'll be by a team who has a smart GM, or it'll be because Theo and Jed decided that they need Prince Fielder. So far we have no idea what it is they want for the Cubs.

I wouldn't write off the Rangers just yet. They have a very capable GM, an ownership group that doesn't seem afraid to spend (wisely) and they have their core group of players intact. Prince Fielder added to that lineup would do some wonders. They can then get Michael Young out of the DH spot onto 1B and let Fielder DH, maybe have them switch off.

If the Rangers wanted to they might be the ideal landing spot for Fielder unless the Cubs are willing to outbid.

That's not true... def if the Rangers were to sign Fielder.

They have a lot of questions with their pitching, but...

Offense goes to the Rangers, while pitching goes to the Angels. It'll be close... and be fun to watch to the end.

I'm still holding out for Prince tho, but the years isn't helping my cause.

Offense goes to Rangers even without Fielder. That lineup is no joke.

Oh yeah true, no doubt. That's why it's not a for sure thing the Angels will win the AL West.

Yeah, plus Feliz could end up being really good as a starter. Also, the Rangers have a good bullpen. The Angels have a better starting rotation on paper but that remains to be seen.
