I don't think Byrd should hit behind Pujols. Very impatient and mostly ground ball hitter. Would be bad. I think Byrd should hit in front of Pujols instead. I'd go so far as to have Castro lead off, Byrd/DeJesus in the #2 spot depending on who's starting that day, then Pujols at the top of the order. At least Castro can beat out GIDPs.

Assuming, of course, Pujols becomes a Cub

Who would you hit behind Pujols?

That is an excellent question. They should really sign that Cespedes kid because I think Soto grounds out too much as well, otherwise Soto would be my choice. Decent OBP and power if he's not fat or hurt or whatever happened in 2011 (lots of ifs) :D

Are you certain that these guys really ground out too much as opposed to you just noticing it more since they're with the Cubs? Do you have data to back this up?

Byrd should not be in the top 5. Period.

Thats not true. If the 4 hitter sees good pitches, he has a good chance of putting up numbers. Byrd is a quality hitter. The 4 hitter doesnt have to be elite, though he might look elite once he starts getting a lot of pitches to hit.

One of the Cubs biggest problems is that theyve had too many free swingers. For this reason, opposing pitchers have had an easier time getting through jams. An added layer to this is (that Theo brings in theory) is improvement at plate discipline. I think improvement in this area both gives Pujols more pitches to hit (with the idea that the guys in front of him will be judicious at the plate).

BTW, what do you think the Cubs should do about who hits behind Pujols?

That's just it. There isn't one on the team.

Ramirez. If I am limited to players on the current team... either Soto or Soriano. I agree with whoever said it though... we really don't have anyone right now. However, that could very well change at the Winter Meetings.

Quite honestly, I think the bigger thing to solve is to get more plate discipline up and down the lineup. Pitches per at bat are huge. If the lineup collectively can improve in this area, this probably will maximize someone like Pujols rather than who hits right behind him in the lineup. Improvement in in plate discipline is like a force multiplier--everyone improves from this. It creates more opportunities by virtue of what happens in front of Pujols. It makes the issue of who hits directly behind Pujols myopic.

I also think the Cubs have more talent than most teams in the division but it's one that severely lacks discipline and cohesion. This is an area of lost/hidden production. At the very least, it's hard to tell what the talent level is because they often play so stupidly.

But back to my original point, I think more of you need to see this in a more wholistic way. One way to protect Pujols is to increase the scenarios where he comes up with 2 guys on base vs. one guy on base and plate discipline is the biggest way to do that. I would even go as far as to suggest that getting mroe guys on base in front of Pujols protects Pujols more than who hits behind him.

The Astros yes, I think almost a tie with the Pirates, but say ahead of them. Reds, Cards, and Brewers are ahead of the Cubs right?

Cubs

Check the ground ball percentage. Byrd's a ground-ball hitter. Soto's not as bad.

He's okay against LHP. Strictly platoon player, probably not the worst thing that could happen against LHP. Although that might just be last year so I could be wrong. His splits are here:

Not much of a platoon split over his career, maybe I was thinking of Jeff Baker, who probably also shouldn't be back on the Cubs unless they have no other options.

Hot Stove on MLB Network earlier said we will be making offers to both.

Honestly, I'm always wary about the Cubs going through the motions so they can pretend like they tried to get top tier players. Along these lines, it would really be helpful if they would report dollar figures. Until I know otherwise, it wouldn't shock me if what the Cubs are offering is laughable and a waste of everyone's time.

I'm pretty sure Theo/Hoyer aren't gonna be fucking around. There's a reason why they are respected.

That thought has occurred to me and I really hope you're correct...but it's still the Cubs.

I've liked going to games in the past but not when the team is garbage like it's been since Ricketts took over. Next tier talent just isn't going to do it for me anymore.
