Believe it or not, I think the A-Rod decision makes it less likely the Yankees sign Tanaka. Had the decision been reversed they had basically no shot to really stay under the luxury tax threshold. However, they now have roughly $23 mil to work with to find a 3B and another starter. Even if they go cheap at 3B you're talking $3-5 mil for a starter. It's sort of safe to assume Tanaka gets at least $20 mil average which would put them just barely over. If you're that close and it has been a stated goal to get under it why would you go over it? The team is built to win today and after that they are likely to be bad anyways as they don't have much young talent. They could instead pick up someone like Garza for $15-18 mil who helps them contend during their window. Additionally, resetting the luxury tax actually helps them in their ability to spend in the next several years.
