I didn't expect the team to have a fast start, so I'm not too worried.
At the same time, some players do need to step it up.
For the most part, our core has been fine. Hossa, Toews, Kane, Sharp, Kopecky, Brouwer, Seabrook, and Keith have all been solid.
Unfortunately, this team expects a bit more than "solid" from Kane, Toews, and Keith... all three can afford to play better although I don't think they've played badly exactly.
While most of the core has been fine, there are also some bad spots that must play better. Bolland and Hjalmarrsson, I'm definitely looking over at those two. Bolland has been brutal offensively, entirely predictable, and outsmarted in the faceoff circle. Please never play him on the PP point again. Hammer has had too many brain farts, although his excuse is more apparent, he doesn't have his fiery little partner to bail the puck to anymore... he isn't ready to lead and anchor his own line with Leddy.
Aside from our regulars, it's hard to see the brightness beyond that. Its quite obvious that it is going to take much longer for our newcomers to gel and become regular contributors to the team. From best to worst:
Skille and Bickell have been our best newcomers (ok, so maybe they aren't THAT new, but you get it)... both have made an impact on the ice and have not looked out of place.
Although I feel Leddy has been a positive contribution to the team and has done a good job limiting his mistakes at the NHL level, I'm not quite sure this step is the right one to further his development -- rather just a band-aid until Campbell comes back. Pirri looked decent today, but clearly just a stop-gap for Sharps injury.
Pisani, Stalberg, Dowell have all been OK. Pisani doesn't really show much offensively, and has been fairly invisible in that regard but he hasn't made many mistakes either which is fine while hes trying to fit in. Same with Stalberg, who actually might be fairing a bit better with his impressive speed in making a standout of himself. Dowell, as hard as he works it seems like he can't hit the net if it were the size of a soccer net... I guess you can't really complain when you are talking about a 4th line player.
Unfortunately, that isn't as bad as it gets, there is one name has has already run itself into the ground for me... and that's John Scott. Absolutely brutal so far, and what baffles me the most is that Scott has made a handful of mistakes yet still gets an opportunity while Lalonde has one gaff in the pre-season and is immediately sent to the minors.
Lastly, Turco... what can you say? Simply put, he needs to play better. I can't say I'm happy with him yet but I also can't say I'm disappointed. What I can say is that I do expect him to be better, and I think he will be.
I'm not too worried overall. We'll see what happens at the 10-game mark and I'd say at the 20-game mark we'll have a pretty good idea of where the team is headed. I think most of these guys will improve. The only guy I really have no confidence in right now is John Scott, so hopefully they have a plan in place for that.
