+/- is quickly becoming the hockey version of the RBI, a stat that doesn't really reflect on an individual player as much as his teammate's abilities - a bad goalie can torch all his teammate's +/-.

The stats on extraskater.com are a lot more advanced and granular. And Kane's a plus in both CORSI and Fenwick.

Because +/- is a shit stat and rarely is a good indicator of how good/bad a player is around the ice. Should just forget about that stat.

Unless it's +/- by a large margin. Then it's quite telling.

Take the Preds for example, before the other night they didn't have ONE player +. IMO that tells a lot.

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
+/- IMHO is more of a line/pairing stat when taken in context, unless like RK said, it's by a large margin.

Until recently Keith was a -2 and Seabs was even, while Hammer and Oduya were both just under Hossa in leading +/- on the team. As such, one can infer that Keith and Seabs were not pulling much of their defensive weight. Both have turned it around to +5 and +7 respecively, which actually correlates to Kane's -9 to -2.

All-in-all, the team in general is trending up and we're already nea-top in the league.

These are good times :)

Well at least four times he's popped on only to recieve a minus seconds after touching the ice. I will tell you the players pay attention to the stat.

of course they do. That useless stat is brought up a lot in contract negotiations.

Has nothing to do with Contract negotiations really. They all like to be plus.... And definitely notice when they are on the ice for a GA.

I'd like another 5-1 win, or something of the good defensive game variety. Would be great to get the team D really rolling for this circus trip.

As already said, from a coaches view, using plus/minus is good to see how line combinations are doing.

The only real way to use it on an individual is if they extremely above or below the norm of zero. If a guy is +35 there's a good chance he's doing fairly well on the ice in generating offense and keeping the puck out of the net. -35 you could say the player neglects defensive zone play, or is on Buffalo.

As Marty Turco said: "stats are like a bikini; they show you a lot of things, but not everything".

I always used -10 or +10, anything in between is subjective, especially if you aren't watching the games. I could see adding 5 either way, but if someone is -14 they are sucking one way or another even strength.

Patrick Roy will have numerous meltdowns causing his players to be on the PK time and again. Pirri with a hatty, Shaw and Kruger scoring as well for a 5-3 win.
