Am I the only one that thinks this "deadline" is just a way to keep the media from talking about it?

I bet they still work on deals behind closed doors.

Yeah the deal I wrote up was an average of 34.57M per year for 7 years.

Left some options though from years 8-10.

Hell I would be willing to give him a CC Sabathia like opt out clause after 3 or 4 years.

Idk, i just think 36 million dollars a year is a lot for anyone to be making. Granted, so is 32 million, so I suppose there's not a huge difference. For that much money, the cubs could pick up a solid middle infielder and a couple of stud relief pitchers, or a good lefty starter, which we really need. The thought of Russell in the rotation because he's a lefty is freaking scary.

Not to mention we JUST got Pena. Granted, I would absolutely take Pujols over him, I just think the message that we're sending to him is a little cold hearted. And I know that winning should triumph feelings and what not, but it really seems horrible when you sign someone then a month later start idealizing deals to bring someone else in to replace Pena.

I'm happy we signed Pena. I think a change of scenery could be all he needs to have a good year. But I guess when you weigh more than your batting average, the only place to go is up. Between the talk of Pujols becoming a Cub and Colvin being ready to back him up when he inevitably gets hurt just seems like the wrong message to send, especially because he was just signed.

Yeah 36 million is a lot I agree, but its for the best player in baseball, and 20 million of that is a buyout of his last three years. So its probably closer to 33 million and we are just screwed that 8th year paying a player 20 million to go away.

Yeah I agree about Pena but he was only signed to a one year deal. None of this would even begin to take place until Pena became a FA anyhow.

They only offered 19-21 million per year? WTF? Did they think he was some kind of joke?

:crazydance:

Doesn't matter now, I'm happy.

Scenarios in FA:
Nationals: Out of Division
Angels: Out of NL completely
Rangers: I love Texas, and he'll be out of the NL completely.
Cubs: We get the best player of our generation
Cardinals: The other teams bids make them have to spend a bunch and then they lose Carpenter AND Wainwright soon
BoSox and Yanks also lure him from the NL completely.

I don't care now, will this Winter. Either way, I will never look at Pujols again. He either destroys the Cards pitching, and doesn't make them any better if he comes back; they'll remain the same as they already have him, he goes to the Nats and the Cardinals suffer, he leaves the NL, or he becomes one of my favorite baseball players (After Castro, Cashner, Colvin, Jackson, and Soto. :shifty:).

Im willing to take a deal at a slight loss if we sign Pujols.

You don't think we haven't tried that either? We're probably going to have to end up paying for like 3/5 of the contract. Somewhere in that area. I don't want to pay like $10 MM/year for Soriano to play somewhere else. He is still productive.

One excutive thinks the Cubs will offer 7 years at 34M per. That comes to about 238M all together.
