than you are naive. this deadline shit is the first step in negotiating. it is a poker game, and it is business.

So what happens then Dews?

Pujols has turned down the latest offer from the club and unless a dramatic change is made, he will announce Tuesday that he's shutting down contract talks for the rest of the season, a person close to Pujols told Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
I've just been going by this, among several other reports.

Hmmm... Check this out

It doesn't look good for those last 4 years.

Thats a very good article and a very good reason why we shouldn't even consider giving him 10 years.

I would pay him alot over 7 years, but if I were to do 10 years those last three would have to be team/vesting options.

Something like 7 years 242 million

12-17 32 million a year
18 30 million
2019 - 28 (20 million dollar buyout)
2020 - 25 (8 million dollar buyout)
2021 - 25 (5 million dollar buyout)

He wants a record contract, 242 won't cut it.

great, you got reports...because things never change in sports.

Really though. What happens during the season with this deadline? I'm no businessman, I'm 16. I want to know.

From the sounds of it, i think you're right. If they don't come close to a deal by noon Wednesday, Pujols and his agent are shutting up. Atleast for a few months for both parties to re-group.

This is going to be the sidebar to every Cardinals national broadcast. Its going to be interesting to see if he holds his demands because I think if at any point in the season they decide to pony up and give him what he wants Pujols will accept the deal.

Gulp. Double gulp.

I'd do it.... Give yourself a 4 or 5 year window to be a really good team. If it doesnt happen in that time frame... Well you're probably fucked til the contract expires or he retires.

You don't think Pujols could still be a productive player at 37?

productive and being an impact player are two different things in my mind.

IMO I do not think this would be a good move for the cubs. Sure it will bring hype and all that with the rivalry, I just think that window is smaller than 5 years, and pujols alone (while getting older) isnt a slam dunk title, a team needs to be built.

Soriano has what, 4 years left at 18 million plus 30 million is 48 million for two players alone, with 2nd base, 3rd base, CF after year 1 of pujols ( byrd wont be as good in 2012 if he resigned) a RF...unless colvin is the guy, Starting pitching etc.

I get that but money will also be coming off each year too. Listen, I understand how much a deal like this could screw up a franchise long term but it really would give you a nice window to win.

I'd rather pay Fielder and let someone else give Albert the money..
