Here's a hoppy one for BHP, perhaps the best of it's style IMO

3floyds_dreadnaught2.jpg

And on the Oberon discussion, I think it is ok, but far from great. (2 hearted and hopslam kick ass though)

I think

gumballhead-150x150.jpg

is a much better wheat beer.

I love all the 3 Floyds beers. They brew some great beer. And Bell's rarely disappoints me. The Arrogant Bastard by Stone is an awesome beer. Take your time drinking it. You'll notice it take on a whole different character from the first sip to the last as it warms up a bit. I think my favorite brewery lately has been New Glarus up in Wisconsin. They don't distribute to Illinois unfortunately, so I always stock up when I get up there. If you're ever near Madison, stop by their brewery. I think it's open 7 days a week. They have a tasting room and a beer depot where they sell all their beers. Cheers!

I was hoping someone would say New Glarus. There spotted cow beer is phenomenal. I'm a simple folk when it comes to beer, give me a Kokanee and I'm happy. Unfortunately I can't find any anywhere in Chicago when I'm there, but they have it up here at school so I just have to drink enough while I'm here to make up for what I miss at home.

I really like Gumballhead and was going to bring it up! Seconded. :)

Went to Beer Hoptacular and sampled tons of beers... wish I could remember them all. Goose Island had a Matilda (Belgian Pale Ale) and a Sofie (Belgian Farmhouse Ale) and I liked them both, particularly the Sofie.

As for Leinenkugel's, I like their Summer Shandy for a good, summer beer. It's basically a lemonade-flavored beer. Also, you can mix their Honey Weiss and Berry Weiss and that is good (think that is a TBird favorite? They also had us taste it at Beer Hoptacular).

Yes, this is Tbird's favorite (I think they call it a, "Honey Bear")- and I don't know how he drinks something sweet. I'm not really a fan of the shandy either.

I really just don't like my beers that sweet but... to each their own!

Good calls on the Boddington's - that was one I didn't put on my list but should have.

The best way to make a shandy in my opinion is to buy some Allagash White and mix in about 40% Sunkist sparkling lemonade.

A "shandy", IMO, is suitable for spinsters, childen and dogs....

Now to clarify, my experience with the "shandy" is taking a perfactly good draft ale or lager and ruining it by adding some fruit syrup. In the 3 years spent living in the UK, I never once witnessed a man order a "shandy" at the pub.

Not to be confused with the many excellent ale and lager beers brewed with fruit adjuncts.

There are perhap two exceptions to my opinion; 1) snake bite - mixing a draft lager with draft alcoholic cider. 2) A lime or lemon wedge in your wheat beer or cerveza.

That will be the extent of beer snobbery rant today....

Wedging a beer is something I don't do.

I'll take lemon in my water (because of my kidney stones)

Hacker Pschorr makes a damn good shandy and radler, and they were quite tasty when I visited Munich last year. That's what really got me into shandies.

Dogfishhead makes a Berliner brewed with peaches that's quite good when I'm not in the hoppy mood.

I guess I'm just a beer snob...

Edit- technically to be a shandy you mix the fruit juice/lemonade/fruit soda with a beer (thus diluting said beverage with all its malty hoppy goodness and alcohol content, making it suitable for spinsters, children, dogs, teenage girls...)

There are lots of fruity malt beverages available to the consumer, more commonly referred to as wine coolers.

So in which category are you placing me and BHP?

I remember when I went away to college my parents bought me a pint glass that had like 20 drinks you can make with beer.

It sticks in my mind because one of them was beer and milk. Believe it or not it wasn't bad and real smooth.

Although at the time I was wasted, and mixed the milk with Old E.

All beer tastes nasty. I can have the same beer all night and still have half of it left.

You should try a shandy or a fruit flavored malt beverage!
