Just caught this thread. As someone who has worked at a fitness club for 7 years, I can give a piece of advice.

Form is key.

Want to have a toned body with muscle? 8-12 reps

Preworkout drinks are garbage. Drink a cup of coffee. I've been doing this for years and it's great.

Protein shakes, if you want and can afford them are great. Me, personally, I stopped taking them and just drink chocolate milk after workout. New studies claim same type of benefit as protein shakes. Haven't touched a shake in 4 months and my body is just as cut and muscular as always. I've noticed I'm less bloated and feel healthier too since cutting those out.

Fish oil and vitamins are vital.

This is the best post you have ever made. Thanks, i appreciate common sense and your experience. Not even trollin.

fhe floor? I grab them off the rack, put them on my knees and rock em up.

Don't bother with flat bench either if your rotators are okay wth incline. My chest hasn't looked better since I started doing incline and decline, n no flat.

Same shit here. Without holders you gotta kick those off your knees. I don't weigh more than 185 and at my best I got up to 110 dumbbells for 6-8 reps. I had to have a spot to get the first one up for sure. Best advice to get size and ripped is to do slow negatives and full reps without losing form. No half ass shit like those guys that do pullups half way down lol. They can never get the full sweep of the lats bc they cheat.

Gotta do both barbell and dumbbells. I have long arms so I also do mostly decline and incline nc my shoulders tend to take over on flat bench.

Good thread and advice

Yeps. With ya 100%. I'm 174 lbs and would love to crush 110 for incline DB by sometime in June. High five for also putting up over 100 lb db's. It's serioulsy not easy and people stare at you the whole time lol. I didn't even have someone help me with my first one, which looking back on Friday, I should have. I was so in the zone and felt good, so I guess it worked!

Negatives are badass, as are supersets. One thing I do LOL at is when people halfass pull-ups. I can do weighted pullups with a 45 lb plate with a dip belt, but my forms awesome and I can maybe get 2-5 reps on a good day, then I superset that with 12-15 reps of leg raises on the pull up bar.. Love gymnast style workouts! Anyone that tries to be a hardass with pull-ups and do many looks stupid. Pullups are fantastic for your back and it's so important to come all the way down and up.

Have you checked out Crossfit yet? It's the goofiest thing I see at the gym now. I sometimes work out at this other club and it has a crossfit room; oh my lawd.. It's like a friggin cult. Try telling a member that and prepare to get railed for speaking against crossfit. All it is is the new workout fad everyone is getting into like Tao Boe was with Tony Banks in the '90s and Aerobics with Fonda in the 80s. Just typical fad crap everyone loves. Talk about BAD FORM, those people are the worst. That ant the huge fat rubber plates they put on the bars that look heavy(so they can post it to instragram), but when you look; it's only like 20 lb plates! I just never understood it, sorry for rant but people blow so much money(my buddy pays $90 a month) to join the crossfit team is upsurd. It's just HIT workouts and incorporating gymnast type movements on the rings and such.

If anyone really wants to get ripped as shit. Look up any type of gymnastics type workouts and their high intensity rep routine.. Oh my god. My Dad was a all state gymnast and was ripped as shit. Those dudes hands down look the best when it comes to beach bodys(just sayin).

Damn! You really do know your shit! You are right on all accounts.

People stare at me and my twin when we grab the hundies lol. All these roiders that weigh more than us by 50 lbs or more do less weight because they don't have the muscle density that we have. Soo funny when they scream and they are only doing 2 plates and change on each side of the bench press.

You are soo right about the crossfit, weird classes...etc. The people that are a little lazy and just don't have "it" tend to do these classes and ***** routines and then preach that it is the best ever. Well...duh...the first time you do something different, you are gonna be sore as ****. Soo funny. If you don't do sports anymore like most of us older folks then lifting and running will get you shredded. There is no subsitute for running....really

Major props to you for cracking the century mark at that weight. Also I love doing weighted pullups and heavy dumbbell rows. Soo hard but they work

Keep it up brah...and good call on the Mullett again! Soo funny how some thought we cleared all those millions for just our rookie class or small FA

Thanks man! Cheers to you too. Hope you are enjoying Cali. I need to make a trip out there soon and visit some family and friends!

Couldn't have called it better about the roidheads. It's so damn obvious when they are juicing and it's annoying working next to one because, you and me sound like we have naturally athletic good phsyiques, and these roid bros just size us up and grunt/yell next to me to get attention.. Weird dudes I tell ya. The worst part about them(not sure if you can tell in your gym), but they smell fucking horrible. The ones at the gym I work out at size me up. This dude so obviously is a roid head and will use the bench next to me and grunt and look over to see if I'm acknowledging and noticing him.. Seriously, gym culture is so damn weird. I have a weird hobby where I like to check out odd sub-cultures, and I swear the gym is a good one to write a book on. I've started a goofy TV script about my stories throughout the years working at a club lol.

Agreed with running and lifting! I need to run more, that'sfor sure. I'm still lean and cut; but I'd like to get my cardio back to where it was. I swear by fish oil and saunas, for losing weight and maintaining healthy, too.

Cheers! GOnna be a fun season.

Oh, and btw.

Hahahahahahaha

Soo true. They get their roid sweat all over the benches and they have a roid smell funk to go along with their smelly gloves, jug of old water bottle, roid acne, and flexing when they walk. I just can't help not to chuckle at them. Most of them that I saw were dorks at UCLA that couldn't get chicks so they thought by roiding up and getting a good body would help lmao! They failed to realize that shit works with girl butterfaces...not guys. Girls don't care about bodies as much as guys do and they won't date a dork that's big...unless it was a F.O.B. Asian chick.

I like to wait for the ones doing 3 wheels on each side of the bench press and then ask if we could jump in and do a set. Then they start peeling off the weights and I say, "Just leave all the weights on". I do an extra rep or 2 more than they do...without screaming. Soo fun!

I can't stop laughing at those videos! Exactly what I was thinking :lmao:

LOL Thanks. It's so damn true. Tires, sledgehammers, horrible form on everything, stupid huge plates to make you look like you're lifting more than you are.

pod080923.jpg

I mean, look at this guy. He would be oe of the strongest men in world with those 45 lbs plates.. But, oh wait..

They're friggin 10 lbs LOL. I've concluded Crossfit is for those wanting to fit in a group/genre when it comes to working out. It's kinda sad, really. Just another quick fad.

But it's gaining a lot of hate in the fitness community, finally. I'm going to try and find the article that points out all the BS with Crossfit and even some of their "trainers' admit they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I am about to start looking for a gym and a trainer. I think Ima pay a trainer just cause I don't really know what the **** I'm doing and also to help motivate.

Thing is, you guys got me all freaked out about dumb ass trainers. I don't have the slightest idea how to find a good gym and good trainer or how to tell if they having you do effective shit or if they are wasting your time.

Save your money and get p90x. You'll need a few things, mainly a pull-up bar, but the program works as long as you work out.

I'm going to play devils advocate on crossfit. It's about quantity, not quality but you need decent form to get good results. The theory that you are always moving and always using resistance weights to challenge you is sound. The problem is that trainers aren't vigilant enough about good form from the beginning and the people working out don't know what is/isn't good for them. And after a certain point the results shift from activity manipulation to diet manipulation. There are always people in EVERY workout activity that don't get results because they fail to recognize what is/isn't working and make the necessary changes. I've said this in a few other threads(probably a few times in this one even), ALL training routines work. Every single one of them. The thing you need to do is change the routine periodically to challenge your body to adapt. The body is amazingly adaptable and will quickly become used to the resistance it meets

P.S.

I don't crossfit, even on a regular basis. I'm a gym rat that uses crossfit, along with other routines, to supplement my free weight addiction so my routines don't get stale.

My favorite bit out of that:

"Crossfit places huge emphasis on form...and not needing it. Crossfit takes complicated movements and gets rid of all the useless shit. Like effectiveness and safety...and replaces it with cool shit like violence and danger."

Haha. Pure gold.

While what you're saying is true, crossfit seems to have a larger % of people doing dumb shit with dangerous form.

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm probably stumbling into the middle of some kind of ongoing polemic. That said, I think crossfit is like a lot of other programs in that if you get a hack trainer working with uneducated consumers you are going to have injuries. I use my own, admittedly outdated program but it works for me and my goals. Like everyone else I see things at the gym that make me cringe, but honestly I can't believe what passes for form from some of the exercises I have seen trainers make people do in crossfit classes. I know people who go to other gyms where they know what they are doing but some of the stuff I've seen is scary.

I think the difference between crossfit and people at a gym is the atmosphere. Crossfit is almost like a challenge between the group to not give up or do more than the next person. The gym is just a random assemblage of people doing all sorts of different movements, most often it's not very intense either. What Gonzo said is absolutely true, it's about the trainer you have in the beginning stages of your training. Everyone has seen "trainers" at a gym completely ignoring what their client is doing and/or instructing them totally wrong. It's the same at every gym everywhere, there are trainers that shouldn't instructing anyone...ever...

I actually saw a trainer today at the gym, texting on his phone while the client was working out. Dude wasn't even paying attention. One would think if your job is one of a trainer, you would pay attention to the individual making sure they are doing the workout or exercise properly and safely.

If I was that client it would've been the last time he did that with anyone. That is bullshit and he should be fired on the spot

I'm sick of my gym. It's gotten way too busy and I'm tired of packing a bag every day. I'm going back to working out at home again. I always had better and more consistent workouts when I did it at home anyway.

Guys, going to the gym to workout is tertiary -- the reason I go five days a week is to scope all the fly honeys in yoga pants and volleyball shorts.

Priorities, gentlemen. Priorities.
