Oh yeah, forgot about the breathing. Your breathing on freestyle should coincide with your recovery (when your arm is above the water). As a lifelong swimmer and former coach, I always stressed breathing on both sides because it evens out your stroke - but for your purposes I would find a side you're most comfortable with.

Another tip, if you are exhaling the entire time your face is in the water it makes things much easier when you come up for a breath. Think it mentions that in the link above, but can't remember.

Another thing since you mentioned shoulder issues....body roll:

This x 1,000,000

I didn't mention it because again, for the purposes of just working out it's not crucial, however moving your body on an axis helps you move through the water much better. The book I mentioned above had a pretty good example - think of boats. The types of boats that can lean to the side, back and forth cut through the water much better than those that lay flat. If you want to get very technical, here's a good diagram about how your arms should move in sequence:

Basically, this is saying that your hands should NEVER be opposite of each other. Personally, I think the idea of that comes naturally and you'll feel it in the water because I imagine your shoulders will be killing you. But again, I've been involved with competitive swimming since the age of 4 so I don't even really think about it.

Yeah, that's a sprinter thing - which I definitely never was. Then again, compared to the other three strokes freestyle was my worst, time-wise, so I maybe never focused on dong that.

I taught myself a few years back. Decided to start swimming because I enjoy the water, plus I don't like to run anymore. At one point in my life I could run a 5k in the low 16's...but those days are long past :) Anyways, I got in the pool and was struggling pretty bad so I started reading as much stuff as I could find, watching stuff on YouTube and slowly improving my technique over time so what helped me get better is all pretty fresh. When you do something as long as you've done it, gets pretty hard to remember all the nuances because for you it's just natural. It would be like me trying to explain how to run well to someone. I can't do it very well. My stride, breathing etc is all completely just what you "do" if that makes any sense.

Makes total sense. I mean look at how many posts I've had to go back because I forgot about things. What makes it worse is that this year, honestly, is the first time in 28 years I have not done anything with swimming - so yeah I miss it, and I want to talk about it.

If I were able to watch you swim - it'd be a cinch. Ultimately, the best advice might be to see if there is someone at the pool you're working out at and ask them to watch you.

Yes it is.

No you aren't.

Yes it does.

No it doesn't.

It's obvious that none of you have lifted before.

You're stupid.

No you didn't.

Oh the head professor of dietary science at Northwestern University said that? Well he's wrong.

No you won't.

I vote to unban all who were banned. I want chaos and I want to see feelings get hurt.

This is an awesome idea. Let's let Panda back in too, that'll be fucking hilarious

Worked out chest/triceps/shoulders just messing around, don't want to push too hard too early. 50 lb dumbellsx15 reps and a bunch of sets, endurance was shoddy

I went to a place called Orange Theory Fitness with my girlfriend on Friday. It's kinda like crossfit lite. It's a lot of treadmill and rowing machine work with some light weight circuit training mixed in. It's a pretty good change of pace but I won't be able to give up my free weights just for that.
