Absolutely. Have you ever met a reservist from WV? They aren't all simple folk, but most are. Not to mention, if you are at war, working as a guard in a jail that is using sleep deprivation, torture, and other lovely techniques and some authority figure tells you to do something, then chances are you are no longer thinking rationally or intelligently enough to decide its unethical and abstain from fulfilling the order.

Just because you follow through with orders doesn't mean you have no idea that it might be wrong.

i dont know personally what their mental state is. But in my humble opinion, they pissed on a corpse big deal. In WW2 they scalped japanese and took their ears and shit and decorated tanks with it I dont see anyone raging at the history of that and act like "the greatest generation" did no fuckin wrong in times of war.

This sort of shit has been going on as long as there has been war, you cant tell me everyone in history that has done this sort of thing are bad people, its war, they spend so much time thinking they could be dead any second, and grow to hate their enemy more than anything, they could have lost their best buddy, Id probably piss on the corpse of my enemy too given the right circumstance. Hell i might piss on em while hes a live, execute em then shit on him, I dont know, wouldnt know unless I was in that exact place.

I mean think about someone torturing raping and murdering your child. Then you in a locked room get to exact justice on the ****** any way you see fit? You think you might do something just as bad?

TAKE fighting out of hockey... its too barbaric! /purple

F'n idiots for many reasons. Mainly, who the **** video tapes shit like this? Fucking morons. And honestly what they did is extremely inhuman. We are supposed to be a better society, more progressed...they are supposed to have discipline...

With that said, I get the stress of all of what they are dealing with as I did myself, but never in my time seen such reckless abandon. If we got caught doing that I would still be breaking rocks in Leavenworth.

So you never got shot at, let alone dozens of times a week?

Its kind of stressful. Just saying...

No I did not. Guess that means that I can't find this disgusting.

Piss on you.

Is it a violation of the UCMJ? Yes

Is it a violation of the Military Code of War/Geneva Conventions (its been 11 years since I was AD, I forget the exact title of that DOD pamphlet)? Yes

Court Martial likely? Yes.

Again I understand why they did it.

Think it shows a lack of unit discipline and poor leadership. Doesn't have to be a senior NCO or officer to say hey this might be wrong or it's not a good idea to video this guys.

And before Pete asks I was never in combat or even a war zone for that matter while I was in the AF but I saw plenty of grisly shit trough working the ER or while investigating aircraft mishaps. .

Agree with others who feel it shows a lack of humanity as well, but I get that as well, being at war seeing disturbing things ect....

Man previous generations got off easy. A civilian gets killed and some poor soldier has to pay for it. Piss on the rotting corpse of some ass hat who was trying to kill you 5 minutes earlier court martial!.

Many of our own relatives who served in previous wars may have done similar things. Hell in my opinion this is pretty damn tame.

eh eh eh, if you know they are illegal, you are obligated to obstain from doing them and then you are supposed to bring the order up the chain of command so someone with more authority can 'deal with it'.

Perhaps it was a realization that what was done in the past is not the correct thing to be doing....

Some perspective, what if one of the dead were your child? Throw out the "terrorist" label, and use soldier. How would some of you feel seeing that video?

Piss on you.

That's not what I meant. I am not excusing their behavior, I am explaining the possible reasons for it. Big difference.

Personally though, I don't hold a lifeless body as sacred as say an ancient Egyptian royal, or a christian person, or a muslim person does.

That's just it though, at the end of the day you are still talking about humans killing other humans. There is nothing pretty, sacred, holy, nice, polite, ethical, moral, blah blah blah about it. Its people killing people. Its war.

If it was reversed how much outrage would there be? Similar to dragging them through streets or hanging them from an overpass? You bet.

Yep! that's the issue. We need to hold ourselves to the same standard as we hold them.

I'm with you on this one, but that's a whole other debate.

It's always been a subject of much interest to me-- the way cultures handle and revere their dead.

That point is moot, they've already done worse.

I could easily see you doing a documentary where you had to film mass graves. I bet you would still have a problem with the smell though. That is one of the worst things on the planet and one that you will be stuck with for weeks.

Yes, because responding with like malicious kind is a deterrent and never prevents escalation...

And since you didn't answer my perspective question, I assume that if what happened was a child or family member of yours your thoughts would be the same?

Side note: to me none of this has anything to do with religion. Some will make it that, but it is not.

Id be pissed I think thats a given because its like rubbing salt in an open wound. Its an emotional catch 22. If someone does something bad to someone you love or care about its very difficult to stand on the sidelines and be objective.

I am not saying what these Marines did is right, I am saying given the circumstances I understand why they did it.

Hell I understand why our enemies would do this shit too, they hate us, I get it, their buddy got his body blown apart by a 20mm from an apache. So he captures some coalition forces, behead them crispifies them and drags him through the streets and I hate him for that. Sometimes its an endless cycle and you cant be objective when you are in the middle of it. Thats why I just say, thats war, its horrible, people commit unspeakable acts, its the way it is, dont like it? Quit making war.

More power to someone if they can maintain the moral high ground, it doesnt change the rage, hate and desire to "do onto others" they may feel, good for them that they are just better at controlling themselves.

I've witnessed and smelled some pretty awful things, but mass graves would be a new one on the list-- not that I'm in any hurry to rush into that one.

I don't know, your toilet bowl after a huge dump might rival a mass grave.
