Something the Wings have done a damn good job at.

And that is they know how to manage the salary cap properly.

The RedWings have to burst from being a horrible team with hardly any talent but young players that has to make big signings to help grow into a cup team in just a 3 year span... they were coasting on top then when the recent Cap Era is born, they have themselves settled and were still well off they didn't need to do anything.

Doesn't mean anything. The Hawks want to get into that position now that they've won it and it takes losing players to do that at this point. That's why it's good they aren't making any splash this offseason and hopefully they don't have to when they get to the point they can eat Huet, instead just make smart resigning like Seabrook a bit after that.

I think Bowman knows he has to try to get to that point. Just hopefully they can.

By keeping a group of core guys surrounded by role players through either their system or fa signings? Sound familiar?

Im not worried either Dmelt

If Niemi asks for that much money, the hawks would be better suited to use that money on another goalie in free agency and pair them with crawford

Nabokov is a free agent now fwiw.

Nabby will be very expensive...reporters are stating that he may have priced himself out of the NHL. I think he'll come down in his demands to remain in the NHL, but he won't come as a bargain.

Philly may be trying to move some salary to sign him as we speak.

You guys are right to be interested in Nabby. He wasn't the main reason why SJ fans went year after year in disappointment. He's a damn good goalie.

Maybe if he is willing to wait a few months, similar to the game Turco's agent is playing, it is definitely exploring to see if there is a fit.

I love how some people say all these guys are replaceable.

Time will tell but right now outside Stalberg there's not another guy NHL "ready" from these deals.

And even Stalberg is far from a guarantee. I read he is a lazy player.

Exactly how is a 10 year vet in Marty Reasoner not NHL "ready" he isn't done, he isn't a high talent guy but a veteran center to add in the mix likely at the 3rd or 4th line.

Your also the one who believes Beach is a "lock" despite not likely being NHL ready himself.

We'll make the playoffs but we will not sniff the #1 seed.

So it's this kind of mood today for you, Joe. Maybe tomorrow you'll be back on the Stan bandwagon and say things like "we're not run by idiots. No need to worry."

You change moods more than anyone I know, including premenstrual women.

I hope the kid doesnt get greedy....we DO NOT want to get into the big money goalie crap all over again. He was the best we had but he isnt a world class goalie by any stretch. We've seen this before....remember Alain Chevrier had a great playoff then went belly-up, even Huet was great in his one playoff for Washington. Niemi is excellent covering the bottom 2 feet of net but suspect up high and the league is sure to know this. Expect him to see plenty of shots top shelf next season. Until he proves he can handle those shots, he wont be worth huge dollars IMOP. Hawks have to either roll the dice and give multiple years or play it safe and sign him short term.

I think you're right on the money about that - with all due respect to Niemi before the season started it was him or Crawford -both played about to the same level, I don't see going with Crawford as much of a step back - but you also can't begrudge a guy a pay day if he can find it (just ask Bobby Hull) - it just may not be in Chicago.

What team is so incredible that they're going to finish that far ahead of us?

Regarding "sniffing the one seed" - Considering that the Hawks played "fairly well" on the road -so what?

Having the top seed did diddly squat for Washington or San Jose. It also did diddly squat the year the Hawks won the President's Trophy in the 1990's.

We don't need the damn #1 seed. We finished #2 in 2009-10 and I think that worked pretty well for us.

Stan feel free to sign some guys to fill in for gutting half the roster.

Or how about you wait til things are settled with with the 4th Defensemen and Goalie before you worry about 4th line additions or a 3rd line defense addition.

Absolutely no reason for inpatient. It isn't like they can sign anyone high priced anyway.
