As for Josh Hamilton:

He just won the AL MVP. The Cubs had a chance to hold onto him after taking him in the Rule 5 draft but instead traded him away for cash to the Reds. That's a loss. Scary thought is if they hold onto Hamilton they may not have to sink money into Bradley as Hamilton would give them both a RF/CF and a lefty bat. I really can't believe I'm having to explain how not holding onto Josh Hamilton is a loss

No its not even like that. I don't even know if we had room on the 40 man for Hamilton. Simply put we drafted him because the Reds paid us to draft him. Its that simple. Sure it would be nice to have him, but thats about like saying that we lost on Pujols because we didn't draft him. Hamilton was no more a part of the Cubs than Tim Lincecum was.

:obama:

Then maybe we should have made room? I mean seriously? How hard is this to grasp?

Plus your understading of the Rule 5 is wrong. If the Cubs didn't have room they could not have participated to begin with. One of the conditions of the Rule 5 darft is you need room on your 40 man roster. The Cubs did.

Simply put we drafted him because the Reds paid us to draft him.
Smart move by the Reds huh?

Sure it would be nice to have him
Yeah. It would be real "nice" to have a guy that just won the AL MVP. That's the point of why the trade is a loss.

but thats about like saying that we lost on Pujols because we didn't draft him.
No, it's not the same thing. We never drafted Pujols and traded him.

Hamilton was no more a part of the Cubs than Tim Lincecum was.
And that's the obvious problem.

Plus Lincecum is still apples and oranges. The Cubs drafted him and Lincecum decided to attend college and not be in the Cubs organization. The Cubs took Hamilton, and the Cubs decided to trade him.

Try again.

Why would they make room for a drug addict who had really no signs of turning his life or his baseball game around?

I am not sure if that's accurate as he was never added to the Cubs 40 man roster. He was simply drafted and his rights were sent to the Reds. I do not believe having a spot on the 40 man is required to draft him.

Smart move by the Reds huh?

Sure in retrospect, but bad move on the part of the teams in front of the Cubs as well.

Yeah. It would be real "nice" to have a guy that just won the AL MVP. That's the point of why the trade is a loss.

Sure it would be nice, but the fact is we never actually had Hamilton. That is the point you are missing.

No, it's not the same thing. We never drafted Pujols and traded him.

Sure it is. It's the exact same thing. The Cubs had no desire to draft Hamilton or anyone for that matter so they were willing to sell their pick. It's as simple as that. Had the Reds not offered us cash we never would have drafted Hamilton in the first place. Do you not understand that? Hamilton in no way no how.
And that's the obvious problem.

Plus Lincecum is still apples and oranges. The Cubs drafted him and Lincecum decided to attend college and not be in the Cubs organization. The Cubs took Hamilton, and the Cubs decided to trade him.

You are very wrong on this. Are they apples and oranges? Sure, but they both were a part of the Cubs organization the same, as in the membership is non-existent. Josh Hamilton was never a member of the Chicago Cubs. Plain and simple.

I am not sure if that's accurate
Then I would suggest reading about the 40 man draft.

Sure in retrospect
Well duh. How else are we supposed to evaluate trades? Is the jury still out on the Lou Brock deal because it made sense at the time?

but bad move on the part of the teams in front of the Cubs as well
The other two teams? Seeing as the Cubs had the 3rd pick.

Sure it would be nice, but the fact is we never actually had Hamilton
We drafted his rights. He was ours. We then traded him/his rights. It would have been impossible to trade him if we never had him.

Are you typically this dense?

It's the exact same thing.
No it's not.

Show me when the Cubs drafted Albert Pujols and/or his rights and traded him.

Go.

Good luck in your quest.

Had the Reds not offered us cash we never would have drafted Hamilton in the first place.
Smart by the Reds. Dumb by us.

Are they apples and oranges? Sure,
Ok then STFU and don't cite it as an example.

Josh Hamilton was never a member of the Chicago Cubs. .
Odd, then how did the Chicago Cubs trade him?

Trading Hamilton was not a loss. They wouldn't have drafted him AT ALL had the Reds not asked them too and pre-arranged the trade. Hamilton wasn't really a stand-out then, he was a minor leaguer trying to save his career after drug use. The Cubs should not have made room, because they would have traded key pieces of their team to make room for a guy who didn't look to be that good at the time. I do, however, often wonder "What If?".

All I can say.

He meant that he was traded literally one minute after being Rule V drafted by the Cubs.

Trading Hamilton was not a loss

Simple question:

Would you rather have the money the Reds gave us..or Josh Hamilton?

They wouldn't have drafted him AT ALL had the Reds not asked them too and pre-arranged the trade.
So the Reds bent the Cubs over. What else is new when the Cubs make trades?

Hamilton wasn't really a stand-out then, he was a minor leaguer trying to save his career after drug use
Really? No Way! I've never heard that!

The Cubs should not have made room, because they would have traded key pieces of their team to make room for a guy who didn't look to be that good at the time.
Or they could have simply optioned a guy to AAA...................

Here's an article from the Spring Training in 06, less than a year before the Cubs got him and traded him:

The Cubs do have a big payroll but that's just because JH over paid for the players. It's not like he brought in top players like the Yanks, Red Sox, etc do. He signed one big player, really and that's Soriano and he just kept his players.

When the Tribune knew they were going to sell, JH was given an open checkbook with instructions to spend x amount of dollars. This was done in an effort to overvalue the team. Soriano was not the only albatross contract as a result.

Yeah I know that but JH did not gto after big time know players. No one heard of Lilly and get got 10M a year. That's what I'm kinda saying.

Exactly, but Bradley was an even bigger mistake. Most of us knew he was a locker room cancer prior to his being signed. That contract lies squarely on JH for not recognizing poor attitude/character.

BTW, didn't Bradley just get arrested?...saw something to that effect over a news wire the other day.

He was on the Yankees, people heard of him hes not some surprise signing by Hendry.

Can we at least agree he is the best baseball GM in Chicago?

This statement has got to be a joke.

JH is an average GM imo

he has made some great decisions(Ramirez,Lee,Garza)

and some really really bad ones(Grabow,Zambrano,Bradley(by far the worst imo)

he DOES have a very high payroll to work with, in fact top 4 or 3 i think

with that much to work with, JH SHOULD be getting some better talent ....however there are some players a wee bit overpaid....that kinda gets in the way of things

I do like the way he is trying to utilize young talent by getting prospects and developing the farm system....but it also speaks for the fact that the Cubs don't really have top notch talent and the talent they do have is getting older or seriously slumping

don't get me wrong, JH is not terrible, but he isn't really good or great imo...he has had some success with this team...getting them to a couple of postseasons....but you look at his mistakes and they have been very costly especially in the last couple of years imo...

I hope that JH can create some success by trying to make a young core built for the future....we'll see

It doesnt matter the reason why, what matters is the Cubs have a big playroll. Most GMs could have done better with a payroll the size of the Cubs. Hendry is a middle of the road GM

He was briefly with the Yankees but he earned his money in Toronto.

I realize that he was also on Toronto. but he was with the Yankees typically most players are "known" when they are on the Yankees

He only pitched 128 innings in NY. I didn't even know he played there til you mentioned it.

Yes Bradley was arrested for a felony for viloting a code or something.
