What the reason for the Rockies to trade Blackmon?

Perhaps they don't. But like I said, his name is out there in rumors. As for why they would, if they keep Cargo he's in RF for them presumably. Dahl is their CF of the future. Parra they gave a fair bit of money to over the next 3 years. So, given he wouldn't be starting I suppose the logic is the pieces they can get for him would be more useful than he would be. For example, let's use the previously mentioned example of Szczur + Corey Black + random pitching prospect. Szczur effectively would fill the bench slot cheaper(Blackmon is making arbitration figures while Szczur is not), they would get a reliever who could potentially make their team to start next year and they get a down the line piece.

It's not a sexy trade but neither was James Russell and Bonifacio for Victor Caratini or at the time Feldman and Steve Clevenger for Arrieta and Strop or Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson for Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino.

Because you would trade any player that helps you get better but nothing the Rockies ever do makes much sense to me so who knows. The issue is with Colorado unable to lure pitchiers in FA they have to draft and develop tehm or trade for and develop them. If I'm Jeff Bridich I make zero trades without pitching coming back, either MLB ready or a prospect. This is an interesting piece on their assets and trade values:

http://www.purplerow.com/2016/7/26/12285320/colorado-rockies-trade-rumors-guide-player-valuer

This piece comes to the conclusion that Blackmon is their most valuable trade asset. I might agree with that in that Gonzales contract might be a sticking block to any trade. Of course he also thinks Boone Logan (my favorite baseball name after Rougned Odor btw) is number 2 on that list so I'm not sure about this guy. Either way you trade to get better and OF is a strength. If you can't trade Cargo you look at Blackmon but, again, this is the Rockies who appear to aimlessly wander the desert in search of a direction.

His conclusion seems fairly extreme on Blackmon. Lopez is the #49 prospect according to MLB.com. I mean he calls him an All-Star caliber CF which I find quite dubious. He's a blow average defender according to the metrics(-10.5 UZR/150) and while he hits for decent average/OBP, he's basically an average power guy. I honestly think that Fowler comp is very fair and Fowler's career OBP is like 15 points higher. If they couldn't get a top prospect for Fowler I don't see why they'd be able to net one for Blackmon even at the deadline. Blackmon's also 30 so it's not like he's got a ton of projection left.

I agree which is why you don't take Szcur. He's a step below Blackmon.

Latest I saw was to get one of their OF's to play 1b.

Let me ask this then. You're a Sox fan so presumably you'd know their prospects better than the cubs. Would you trade Carson Fulmer for him? Spencer Adams? Zack Burdi? Alec Hansen? Perhaps you don't feel the Sox are buyers but for the sake of argument would you deal any of those pitchers to upgrade from a 0 fWAR Austin Jackson? If your hang up is strictly no to Matt Szczur, fine but from my stand point he's more just a place holder. You wanna throw in Pierce Johnson instead? Cool. To me they are the same value. Ditto for Stinnett, Zastryzny, and Black though I wouldn't deal Zastryzny because cubs are short on lefties in the upper minors.

From my view point, Szczur is someone the cubs would want to include because they can't option him down and if they are dealing for another OF it becomes a jam. I also outlined why I think he's a useful player for Colorado but I recognize that they might just view him like you do.

I agree with you but to play devil's advocate if the Cubs had a pitcher to go along with Szczur it would be a good fit as if they think Blackmon won't be a full time player going forward why not get Szczur, younger and cheaper with more of a 4th OF profile and get a pitching prospect instead? Then it would make sense. The Cubs don't have pitching to trade so I don't see a match with Colorado in any way.

Largely depends on where his value is. If it's closer to where I am talking do we as fans really care if they give up Pierce Johnson or Stinnett? I mean I honestly wouldn't even be that annoyed if they included Underwood though I think that's probably over paying.

Just as a reference point on trade value for OF right now...

Melvin Upton was dealt to Tor the other day with cash for Hansel Rodriguez. San Diego is picking up all but $5 mil left on Upton's 2 year deal. Upton is 31. He has been worth 1.5 fWAR. Hansel Rodriguez is a 45 grade pitcher according to mlb.com(Fastball: 65 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45). To use a barometer, Pierce Johnson is also 45 grade(Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Cutter: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45) but has better overall stuff.

Maybe a team falls in love with Blackmon's skills compared to Upton but Blackmon's been worth 1.3 fWAR, is 30 and has similar control/cost. So, all signs point to him not being that expensive a rental piece.

So no, I wouldn't trade any of our pitchers for Szcur. Szcur isn't a missing piece for me for any team. So while I may want him, he's only worth a 20-30 org spec for me.

There was a throw in sent to colorado in the ian stewart deal who is now third in batting average in the national league, so the reason they trade Blackmon is to get two or three that might add up to over one.

I dont know when the cubs are gonna realize that Fowler is not going to be 100% this year, the you go we go only works if fowler is running. Blackmon on the top of this lineup would be a big lift, otherwise get Almora back up here and sit fowler til september.

Cashner to Miami apparently though no word yet on return.

Edit: Also apparently got Colin Rea.

The Padres are getting Marlins top prospect Josh Naylor as one of multiple players in the trade, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The powerful first baseman was Miami’s top pick in the 2015 draft.

Nice trade for Miami shoring up the back of that rotation and Cashner has pitched decently in his his last couple of starts. You would have thought that they would have wanted a little better of an upgrade but I think this starts to solidify the WC for them.

With the talk of market price, not sure they can afford a better upgrade. Hell, I'm not sure anyone outside the dodgers and boston can afford an upgrade with the prices apparently being as high as they are.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. You have to wonder what the Dodgers in particular will do. I get that their rotation has been pretty solid without Kershaw but why bother making an expensive run without any certainty of his return?

Apparently Edwin Jackson is a name worth talking about at the trade deadline... what a time to be alive....

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/192436282/pitchers-starting-tonight-who-have-trade-buzz/
6. Edwin Jackson, RHP, San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds, 10:40 p.m. ET
In Andrew Cashner, the Padres traded a rental starter whose value was predicated largely on his performance in the very recent past. How about doing it one more time? Jackson, 32, has made only two Major League starts this year -- but they were quality starts against the contending Giants and Nationals this month. Jackson, who was in the World Series rotation for the champion Cardinals in 2011, is an unlikely trade candidate, but he bears watching nonetheless.

The Nationals are supposedly willing to trade Lucas Giolito straight up for Andrew Miller and yet Jon Heyman is reporting that it won't be enough. That's insane. A relief pitcher that pitches 60 innings a year is worth more than the #5 prospect in the game and likely the best pitching prospect? Seriously I'm speechless.
