So Mule, do you have a female's perspective of the complete lack of depth of the female characters in True Detective? Does it really matter, does it bother you, etc?

I would think that Hart's wife could've been developed much better and it would've made the story a little deeper.

Love that show, did you start from the beginning?

Yea I finished the first season (only 5 episodes).

It takes me awhile to warm up to comedies... I always start from the beginning to understand the characters.

Aziz Anzari is hilarious.

Wanted to throw my .02 in for Netflix-able show: Sherlock.

BBC, format is 2 seasons so far, 3 episodes per season, 1.5 hours an episode (done like a book per episode).

This is the only format or medium that in my opinion represents Sherlock Holmes as he should be from the books. Not some frilly dumb hat wearing prissy pansy who is super-smart or some uber pimp who reeks of charisma ladies-man but is really smart (a la recent movies).

Watson, Brother Mycroft, Moriarty, all done very well in my opinion.

I do think that Michelle Moynihan's character does have some depth, as does the daughter, but they are so far in the background for most of the series. I actually really liked the most recent episode because we got to see her take some action, dictate how her life would go. Her dialogue was excellent and her performance on the show, even when small, is always captivating and exciting. She doesn't have a showy role, but it's real and honest and steely and she does a great job.

However, the problem is that women are viewed as sex objects and plot movers and not real characters with depth. Murdered prostitutes and a young girl who's suffered abuse and traumatized and a long-suffering wife? THAT'S NEW! I think there is a level of laziness. Those are obvious plot devices. And a plot device is not a character.

I think the daughter and her attempts to own her sexuality in whatever way she understands is interesting, but not explored enough. That might change in the final two episodes. What the show does well is show the way Marty, a seemingly "good guy" and family man actually does and thinks and how clueless he is about his contradictions. He cheats on his wife and acts like women are for fucking and serving him, but when his daughter has sex for fun he flips out on her. Gross! And also how Cohle has empathy for women and does try to talk to them (Marty's wife for one) on the level, but still doesn't have a complete understanding of them.

In conclusion, there are elements (use of women as plot devices, women as violent crime victims, women as objects) that are not great and those things do bother me. But I think that mostly the way that it's explored really illuminates the ways those women are viewed and it's is well done. It's a complicated show and there is a level of knowingness about the treatment of women and their position in the show. It's not perfect by any means.

Overall though, this show is excellent. I think the writing and plotting get high marks. It does matter that these female characters have less depth than the male characters, but it doesn't make the show terrible.

My hope is that the second season will flip the narrative and that the detectives will be women. That would be ideal.

I do believe that's part of it. Like Mule said, they are used as a plot device, but that doesn't necessarily excuse the shallowness of the female characters. Obviously most are in the background of the show. Even Maggie, who IMO could've been a hell of a character, is kind of weak. Yeah, she's got some serious good lines, but I think they barely touched the surface.

All that said, I still love the show. No show is perfect. I have issues with other scenes that seemed out of place or not well thought out, but overall the whole body of work has been excellent.

My favorite teams
 1. Portland Timbers
 1. Chicago Blackhawks
...So, Keith and Seabs were supposed to have been on Chicago Fire last night. Anyone catch this? It aired at the same time as Face-off (one of my wife's favorite shows) so I just have it DVR'ed--was not able to catch it.

On suggestions from around the web regarding other TV crime dramas I started watching The Fall. The atmosphere of the show is nothing close to that of True Detective, but 2 episodes in and I'm hooked on it. It's only 1 season at this point and that first season is only 5 episodes. I really have to say that I'm really liking these short seasons that BBC does. It makes it so much easier to watch and get into quality shows and there isn't as much crap filler.

I disagree. It isnt about those characters and isnt the story being told. Although I do agree with Maggie, I dig her.

Sort of like not liking that the male characters in Sex and the City are nothing but plot devices. But it isnt about the males, it is about the 4 women, ya know?

I've never watched Chicago Fire, but that was some terrible 2:30 of television right there.

For sure I don't have the same fervor for Walking Dead that I did for Breaking Bad. Don't think I could sit and watch 10 hours straight the way I did with Breaking Bad (to catch up). But you could do worse than watching Walking Dead for an hour at 11 pm on a Sunday night.

So I did marathon the walking dead season up to last nights episode. Admittedly, after they get run out of the prison it gets better. I like that they are having episodes focusing on just a few characters, allowing them to expand on their lives before the zombies and actually get to know who they are. Character development was really horribly lacking on this show for the supporting cast.

I'm curious what is going to happen with that stone cold killer of a little girl.

Sad to see it end. It did have a lot of very well done creep factor to it. It does return next year but with a different cast. Woody and MM will be hard to beat, but HBO seems able to do it.

I thought the mood and atmosphere was of the last episode was brilliant. However, it seemed like a lot of the story was rushed or just left out. They never touched on or filled us in on this supposed large scale cult. They never mentioned why the Tuttles covered everything up. Power and family doesn't really explain it because the type of shit that was going down was beyond normal family protection. It seems to me they had participated in it at some level but they never really go into detail. Why the heck would he keep a video tape of it otherwise?

Perhaps they'll continue the story next season to answer more of these questions. The writer, Pizzolato, had insinuated that next season would be two female detectives. The way the season ended I thought maybe if they continue with the same setting and story perhaps it centers around the two other detectives, Gilbough and Papania.

Yeah.... I thought the last episode was good, and I don't want to say I was disspointed because I wasn't, but it didn't seem to really have the closure I was expecting. You kinda knew what was going to happen and I was waiting for a lot of the why. It was shot excellently though and the dialog and evolution of the relationships was solid. Wish it could have been a couple more episodes. I was glad they didn't drag out finding him once they were one the trail, but like you expected to have more revieled. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
