I think that you have to go with Jed's MO. Sell short term for long term.

Bellinger is going into the deadline as one of the hottest hitters in baseball. He leads all qualified hitters with a .442 average (38-for-86) since June 24. He returned from the injured list (left knee contusion) June 15.

Plus GG level D. I would guess that the Yank's would be his top destination.

Stroman and the Rays have been connected. But if he gets injured he could pull his opt that puts TB in a hole. So that is now where a done deal.

Hendricks I don't see teams lining up for him. I see him as a Cub and not tendered.

About it. Replacement time is pretty much covered. Tauchman and Morel should soak up CF.

On returns TBH what ever is the best return package. I see the 1st round pick pushed to 3B and fast tracked through the system. That pick was with purpose. So I wouldn't say have to get... they just need talent that equals what they are selling. If no team meets Jed's price then roll with them for the year.

I was all for trading Bellinger....in a way, still kind of am. He is not only the Cub's best player but also plays two positions very well defensively. One is a position of need and since no one knows if PCA is the real deal or not, it might be two positions of need, Even if the kid can play, Bellinger would give you great depth and lineup options for the manager. If he really likes it here, pay the man....you gotta pay somebody. If he insists on going to FA....then you trade him. He should draw a bundle but you never know about trading for kids....Mervis is a great example. A lot of these kids have a ceiling that is somewhere lower than the MLB level.

That thought has crossed my mind also. If Jed paid Bellinger and decided to trade some excess depth for players with control that fill needs until the next wave hits. I'm fine with it.

You are not wrong making a cornerstone around 2 players that play both sides of the ball top end.

You won’t know it from the box score due to an official scorekeeper who apparently has never before seen baseball, but this has been one terribly played game.

Smyly turned two easy double play balls into one out, and Jordan Walker dropped a ball he had entirely in his glove, and none were errors.

Passed ball by Contreras leads to Bellinger being thrown out when he should easily have scored.

Bad ball from two bad teams.

I wonder if there could be some merit to the idea of if the Cubs don't go in the tank over the next 6 and the Cubs make a move to add a Candelario and a Chapman type for packages that don't deplete the farm of course and just trust in the guys and go for it to convince Stro and Bellinger the Cubs are serious about building a winner. Sometimes that's what it takes to attract other FAs. If/when Stro opts out, that Cubs will have around 100M of CBT cap space and technically needs at CF (PCA could be AAA for 2024), 1B, 3B, 2 SP, and of course pen.

Potentially bringing back Bellinger and Stroman would probably take 55-58M. The Cubs could fill CF with PCA and let him go through it and bat him in the 8/9 hole while playing Bellinger at 1B. 40M to bring in a 3Bman and most likely pen help unless they want/manage to trade Smyly and then go after another SP. I doubt they go that route.

Did anyone else get the impression from Hoyer's Press conference that the Cubs were in a good position to resign Bellinger?

I took it as Jed wanting to publicly let Bellinger know they want to. But money will talk.

And even if they offer a lot and Bellinger loves Chicago, Boras will squeeze every last penny from whoever wins the bidding.

I have to admit I didn't see them closing in on first in the division a month after the break and definitely not by being a run scoring machine while Smyly and Stroman fell off a cliff.

Say what you want about Ross but he's got them believing they can and should beat anyone. And the fact that he's benched Suzuki to keep Tauchman in the lineup says he's serious about winning now.

There's a lot of the season left and I highly doubt they can stay this hot for long. However even if they end up missing the playoffs or going out early as a casual fan I'm having a lot more fun than I would if they traded Bellinger for a couple of prospects.
