I don’t think so, but it’s pretty subjective anyways. Considering he was not liked by teammates or media I am not sure why anyone outside of the Cubs would like him as it relates to baseball. Now you want to say people like him because of Juvenile Diabetes, I am in agreement there but that has nothing to do with his eligibility into the Hall of Fame. Historically off the field stuff doesn’t help a candidate to get in, but can in some instances hurt the chances.

Red Sox fan here.

If Boggs only hit what he did on the road for his career he makes it. If Santo does, he never even makes an all star game. Nice try

Do me a favor then brett if you have time. Here's Yaz's splits:

Carl Yastrzemski Career Batting Splits - Baseball-Reference.com

Go year by year and see how his HR totals (home and away) changed. It probably doesn't matter because he was good at baseball, but it would be interesting to see whether he derived any benefit from the era shift from deadball to not-so-deadball.

Ron Santo played almost exclusively in the deadball era, and Yaz overlapped with him but then I'm pretty sure they changed the height of the mound after Bob Gibson was so dominant in the late 60s. They might have also changed the construction of baseballs and the rules for when baseballs are changed and taken out of play. There's lots of factors going into this. Home park is undoubtedly one of them, but if you're using homer totals, you have to look at that too.

Totally right, 1969 mound is lowered. Santo plays 69 thru 75 in the same era as Yaz.

He retired after 1974. Yaz played until the 80s I think. DH was added in 1973 or 1974, forgot which. That will undoubtedly extend one's career though.

Not.

The.

Point.

But.........if Boggs hit .302 his entire career, he never gets to 3,000 hits etc and never puts up the stats that help him become and AS, and get MVP talk.............. and has a career OPS+ of 82 he does not make the HOF.

Go away with this dumb crap.

So basically Yaz is the much better version of Harold Baines.

:smug:

Yaz didn't full time DH until his final two season but I think he was getting decent PT there post 1975 or so.

He also moved to the IF a bit as well.

According to WAR which I know folks hate, Yaz was twice the player Baines was :D

bretts anti Santo argument basically comes down to: He didn't hit well away from Wrigley Field.

Wow.

Compelling.

Yaz was a 1B when that happened...usually OFs move to 1B when their legs give out.

I think Yaz also batted lefty, which at Fenway Park seems to be an advantage but I'm not a Red Sox connoisseur. Just figured it's easier to clear the short RF porch than that green monster.

It would also give Yaz an advantage since most pitchers are right-handed.

He's now also a form of birth control.

Yaz can do it all.

First off, totally right on the year. I missed that. Thanks.

Secondly I agree, but if you look he really didn't play it until 1975 at all and not really anything more than 30 or so games until I think what, 1982?

:obama: That's the argument when you eliminate the total stats, yes. As well as no playoff, not much of a clutch player, bad teammate, bad to the media.

Rice Cube, Are you trying to say Santo was better than Yaz?
