If no one wants to fight Scott...then what good is he? It takes two to drop the gloves, as we saw against the Canucks last year in the playoffs when he dropped the gloves (I believe with Glass) and Glass refused and nothing happened. Scott barely hits anyone out there because he can barely skate. Scott doesn't stop the other team from taking liberties with our players, because quite frankly they aren't going to have to pay for it if they don't want to, because he can't do anything but fight...and as I said, it takes two to fight.

Definitely valid.

But things absolutely changed on the ice once Scott joined that Vancouver series. Now, that could have been a bunch of things - the hawks finally being motivated to stop being pussies after the Torres hit for example - but I think Scott being there does have an effect on after the whistle shit (of which Vancouver was definitely the aggressor up until that point).

Yeah he might not lay you out with an open ice hit or even get a chance to fight you, but if you keep snow showering Crawford or keep hacking at Kane... he'll find you after a whistle. Considering how mentally soft much of Vancouver is- I think it worked in that series.

^^^ haha, we just pointed to the Vancouver series and had different opinions on it. No worries, both seem like valid arguments and maybe it is one that can go either way. I feel strongly about my side as I'm sure you do about yours. All is good.

Hey, they won 3 games in that series. John Scott was in the lineup for all 3.

They lost 4 games in that series. John Scott was out for all 4 (including game 7).

Don't deny the Scott-effect! :troll:

(I'm pretty sure there was some time where a similar stat was made in regards to Adam Burish being in the post season line up too :lmao: )

^^^ Scott played in 4 games in the series if I remember correctly.

He was on ice for probably about 5 minutes a game and that number is skewed because he got ice time towards the end of blow outs when the score meant nothing. To me, that is just a waste of a player. A waste of a shift where one of our top 9 guys could have gotten a rest, but they had to double because Scott can't play a regular shift. I really don't think Scott is a factor at all for 5 minutes on the ice and 55 minutes on the bench.

The argument that Scott made the Hawks win in that series is almost as dumb as when people said that Seabrook being out helped the team because they won the games after that. Some people didn't want Seabs back because he was "bad luck" It was a :obama: moment.

Petition to turn John Scott into this forum's Stalberg, thus retiring STALGOD as the running Hawks joke?

All in favor.

Personally, I really don't think there is a "Scott effect" at all.

Hell, look at all the cheap shots that went on in the series versus the Canucks in the playoffs. Torres on Seabrook, Hamhuis on Bolland, Edler's elbow on Brouwer, Torres knee to Ben Smith. I'm pretty sure atleast 3 out of 4 of those happened with Scott in the lineup. I feel like no one is afraid of him, because they don't have to be. He isn't going to do anything to retaliate because he barely plays, he probably isn't fast enough to hit you, he can't be defined as a chippy player - because he doesn't have the skill set to be, and you don't have to fight him if you don't want to.

I just feel like Scott does nothing to benefit the team whether he is in the lineup, on the bench, or on the ice. The best place for him is in a suit in the press box.

I understand such things cannot be pinpointed because it's so difficult to make it tangible, so-to-speak. I will point out that Patrick Sharp disagrees with you:

You look at what the presence of John Scott did for us last year in the playoffs and other regular-season games. I think the tougher and feistier you are helps the skill guys definitely.

Oh, I think I remember correctly that Scott was in the lineup for the G3 loss and out of the lineup for the G7 loss.

Aye. Scott is easier to make fun of. At least Stalberg had a goal this year...

Hell, Stalberg had more goals last year than Scott has had in his professional career (including AHL games). Close to double.

Stalberg actually started to accept his role last year, I think he could be a real nice 13th guy for the team this year. He was willing to fight, even if he got his lunch fed to him, I guarantee it still got the team going knowing that Stalberg was willing to take on Bieksa for the team.

The only disagreement I have with your thoughts here is that initially, I believe Scott was brought in as a Sopel replacement (hoping for a "big tree" shot-blocker effect) since the team started him off as a defenseman and kept him there for a while. It wasn't until that experiment failed that they finally put him on the wing and the story developed as you said.

The folks who are "bagging" on him have unrealistic expectations (ya know, that he's here to actually play hockey).

He's a great ass-kicker and a true heavy, but there were far too many times he was too "nice" on the ice. I can agree with anyone who "whips" on him in that aspect as he wasn't living up to his role. That's reasonable to me.

I don't take that as disagreement, but rather an addition - and yes, I can see that - I mean the people without blinders about Sopel would realize that although I am sure he was a nice enough guy, as a defenseman he as pretty much at the end of the road, NHL-wise.

-I would also point out too -about his role, in looking into it- the reason Minne seemed to have found Scott expendable -was because of what Iago was saying about his performance as a Hawk. He'd beat the snot out of you if you were foolish enough to accept an RSVP invitation.

haha, didn't that actually happen twice in one shift for him? Broke two sticks and then smiled like a clown as he glided off the ice?

You just had to go there and remind us all....so, so many once great stars turned washed up duds signed by the Hawks.

:D

I forgot Wendel Clark... and while not necessarily a star - they did have Greg Millen for a bit...

___

I'm pretty sure that the team management would have liked him to have broken his stick with a cross-check attempt... but -well, whatever.... why bag on guys that aren't relative ---

which reminds me - - - how is Akim Aliu doing? Did the Jets organization dump him yet?

That's the exact roll I want Stalberg to have. I don't want him to be one of our main players though. Not yet. In a few years, maybe. It all depends on when and how he matures.
