Doesn't have to be that simple. My thoughts are a smart organization tips the balance of the deal toward the back end to avoid it. I laid out an example in another thread which basically made the first 5 years of the reported 10 years he's looking for a 5 year $90 mil deal and the second half a 5 year $110 mil. That gets you to the $200 mil over 10 that's being thrown around and if Heyward opts out early you're getting him cheap for a couple of years.

Good point.

Theo, is that you?

I would have hung the phone up on ATL, if that was the case.

Agreed - they're insane.

Much like the Jose Fernandez talks between Marlins and whomever. Marlins reportedly are asking for FOUR major leaguers, and two prospects. I wouldn't trade that if you guaranteed me he'd win two Cy Youngs.

I don't want to give up Soler at all and i certainly don't want to commit 200+ million on one player. I never been a fan of those kinda contracts. I just want us to nab up a CF and call it a day

Source: White Sox have acquired 3B Brett Lawrie from Oakland. Only I-dotting and T-crossing left. @susanslusser was on it.

If I knew that Baez could play plus D CF out of S/T I would call it a day this off season.
Although Hoyer said tonight that CF is their main priority now, i still think their looking for that young cost controlled starter.

I just think that the couple guys they picked up arent anything more then just depth for this year. .
I think Hammel going to be moved to shed his 9 mil , meaning their not going to get much in return to do so.
doing that will give them more flexibility to add a decent CFer wheather it Heyward or someone else that good.

I think Baez may be that key piece to acquire that starter.

that was the thinking I and a lot of others had going into this. but after seeing what the price was for Shelby miller, the cost for a young controlled good starter is steep it seems

Yea but just because the Dbacks grossly overpaid as most MLB GMs have said, doesn't mean teams expect everyone else to be stupid too. ..

I dont know, i just have a feeling they have 2 big moves their going to make with CF and another starter..

They said they had about a dozen trades on the burner and they only made 1..

I don't really see them moving Hammel after he took a shorter/cheaper deal to return to the Cubs a couple months after being traded before

Yea but him sulking and complaining after maddon pulled him and sucking the 2nd half again may have trumped that

Like I said. If they feel Baez can handle CF don't be surprised if they hold the deck.

The kid from the Yanks may end up pretty damn good from how he is viewed. 5 quality pitches of avg to above avg. he has the make up all he needs is to put it together.

I'm not too concerned on getting a name in the rotation. They have options to fall back on.

Add to it they got rid of the need for a lead off. It comes down to CF D now. If Baez can handle it and with his explosive bat. Ya

@jonmorosi: #Cubs remaining aggressive after Ben Zobrist signing. They appear willing to play Jason Heyward in CF if they can reach a deal with him.

@jonmorosi: #Cubs also have continued trade dialogue; they are interested in Tyson Ross, Carlos Carrasco, and Danny Salazar, among others.

I didn't think they were done...

I'd be increasingly surprised. All of the talk lately out of the front office with regard to Baez is flexibility. Think Maddon mentioned him like zobrist today. And honestly, given the way Maddon likes to manage and the multi-roles people presently have that makes sense.

right, but put yourself in the shoes of the other teams that have young cost controlled pitching....youre going to use the Shelby miller trade to your advantage. just like david price set the market for starting pitching, boston gave him crazy big $$$, more than any other team was willing to give up but it still is used as a reference point

We may look at it as stupid but it set the market for young, cost controlled starting pitching, at least for now. If you're Cleveland, San Diego or even Atlanta if they're still listening on Teheran, you're looking to either cash in or hold on to your chips and wait for the deadline. Pitching this winter has become absurdly expensive and wishing it wasn't isn't going to change that. Is there another move there for a young starter? Maybe but so far they have made solid moves without yet touching their young players, which we all expected them to have to do. If you had told me we'd be at this point with only CF left to fill, and not even the lead off side of the loss of Fowler, and Soler and Baez would still be here I would have been very skeptical. I always assumed that of the trio of Soler, Baez and Castro two of the three would be dealt, and that could still happen, but so far only Castro has moved. I think at this point signing Heyward is probably their focus along with contingencies plans if that doesn't happen. Pitching is probably on the back burner for now.

Hopefully the big trades are done. Keep Soler

I'd like to see them make a true effort for Jason Heyward and if that gets insane, a Span type will be fine.

I know it sounds strange but one reason I don't want to get Heyward is because teams that win the off-season (on-paper champs) seem to never win the WS. Look at Washington last year. On-paper they appeared to be the best team in baseball, but there is so many other elements at play (chemistry, etc) that can't be accounted for.

Heyward would win us the off-season and on-paper we'd look like an unbeatable juggernaut. But it just seems to me that those teams usually have too much star power and not enough intangibles to generate the necessary chemistry.

Is this a total bizarre thought?

I am a little intrigued by Span and his high OBP. Having two guys at the top of the order (Zorbrist and Span) with high OBP% before murderer's row (Rizzo, Bryant, Schwarber, and Soler) would seem to set the table up nicely.
