The Cubs are denying any reports that Baez is traded.

#Cubs have talked to #Braves about Shelby Miller at length, but a source insists they are not close to a Javier Baez trade at this point.

The #Cubs insist that there is no deal at all. They did not acquire Shelby Miller, Cubs executives say

Didn't you not want Shelby Miller?

Or are you one of these Madden, armchair fapping GMs?

I didn't want to trade Soler for Miller. I value Soler much more than I do Baez.

I view them about equal although they both have different question marks. Soler's are the history of soft tissue injuries and the inability to be anything more than an average corner OF at best. I think his floor is as a solid MLB player that might sniff an All Star game or two. His ceiling is maybe 4 or 5 AS games and a consistent power threat with a solid plate approach. I don't see a superstar there in either case. One of Baez main knocks has been his floor and I think that's higher than we thought. At worst, with his defensive skills and strong work ethic, he's a high end utility player with pop that can play all over the field. At best he's an elite power hitter who again can play all 4 IF positions and maybe OF. His change in approach in the minors last year and his dramatic drop in K rate in AAA from 2014 to 2015 is impressive. Once it was tough to view him any better than a 28-30% K rate guy but if he's a 23-25% guy he's a superstar not far from Giancarlo Stanton. Moving either guy could bite you in the ass. That doesn't mean you don't consider moving either one if it makes your team better.

The thing with Baez is that we already have Russell and Castro. If we're not moving Castro, then we need to move Baez. We don't need all 3 of these guys.

Baez has more versatility than either especially if it turns out he can play some CF. Not to mention the power. Push comes to shove I'd probably rather trade Baez too but again if it makes the team better I'm not overly attached to one over the other. Then again I'm not quite as high on Soler as some are.

I don't want to break into the +/- for Baez but I will say I've always thought the cubs needed to get an impact player back. I think I'd be ok with Miller. Fangraph ran a thing on him awhile back talking about how he essentially has been a 2 pitch pitcher until the past year when he started to develop some of his other pitches.

My take on this is that if the cubs are talking to 10 teams that the demand for Baez/Soler is pretty ridiculous and that if a trade hasn't happened yet that just means the cubs thing they can get more. I can't say I blame them either. If you get teams to buy into Baez potential, he has I believe 6 years of control. That level of control with a player of Baez potential has historically brought sure fire #1's.

Baez for Miller doesn't make a ton of sense to me because

1. The Cubs just resigned Cahill and said they'd give him a chance to start
2. Obviously the Cubs don't believe in Hendricks long term if they feel they need two starters
3. The Cubs are giving up a potential stater for a guy who is topped out at being a #4 for two years and a #3 in three years when he'll then be Arb 3

I wonder if the Cubs would do the deal for two younger guys than just Baez. Unless the Cubs feel Miller is Arrieta insurance, then a deal for Baez feels.

People were clamoring for Ben Zobrist. Baez is going to end up just as versatile with the ability to slug 30 to 40 homers in a season. That is tempting to any team. Also, he has had one not even full year of swing adjustments and he came a long way. I would rather try to push Soler. I don't think Soler ceiling is as high as people thought. He has had injury concerns. Baez has only had freak injuries. I would love Shelby Miller but I would love for it to probably be for Soler or something other than Baez. Im a gambler by nature and I want to gamble on him.

People who wanted Zobrist wanted him for lack of strikeouts + high OBP. That's not the same skill set as Baez (though to be honest, with the Lackey signing, trading either Baez or Soler for a SP seems like an overpay).

My only concern with moving Baez is Addison Russell seems to be injury prone. If he goes down, we're looking at a La Stella/Castro infield. And La Stella was injured himself most of last year.

I think Soler is more likely to develop into an offensive monster than Baez. Soler has tremendous plate disciple. Baez brings + defense to the table.

Baez or Soler is a really tough call. If we acquire Shelby Miller, I hope he's good.

Exactly. Baez can play virtually any position. To think that we won't have an injury somewhere is short sided.
And what exactly are we going to do with six starter and several in the pen that could move up to starting? You aren't going to get a bag of balls for either Hendricks or Hammel when being forced to move one. How many more games per year to you win by adding a Miller and subtracting either Hendicks or Hammel? Not that many.
And what does Miller do for you in post season?

I feel that the 2017 Cubs being this roster is huge for them

Hitters
C - Contreras, Schwarber (also LF), Defensive Guy
IF - Rizzo, Bryant, LaStella, Baez, Russell
OF - Soler, Heyward, Almora, strong defensive guy
SP - Arrieta, Lester, High quality arm, Hendricks, Young Guy
Bullpen - Easy to do year to year

That team I think can win a WS if you give them 3-4 years. And if I'm trading any of the named guys, I really want to see a better #3 than Miller.

I'm talking zobrist versatility.
