Assuming Cubs brass thinks they far away..Why go after DeJesus and Capano type of players. I just dont get it

They'd be filler. They're relatively inexpensive but still productive and so you can get them for short, reasonable contracts while they still don't completely suck. Then you can use the rest of the money to go after Pujols. Or whoever.

Even if they don't contend this coming season, having flexibility in your role players and knowing that more money will come off the books when you no longer have to pay Byrd, Dempster or Zambrano means you still have Pujols in 2013 plus a shitload more money to go after players. Let's see what happens.

Of course they'd still have to find other pitchers if they do decide to shop Garza, and other batters to protect Pujols or get on base so he can drive them in, but getting Pujols isn't a bad idea.

If they are going to suck why not suck with guys making 450K? Sorry but why not give Campana, Colvin shots in OF. Why not give Shark and Cashner shot. Im tired of signing these old ass vets for 1-2 yr deals and saying they are trying to compete. Legitly compete or GO YOUNG! I rather pay money to see kids then see 30+ y/o lose 80+ games

Dunno. I don't run the team. Ask the guys who do. Oh wait, they're not talking

Campana and Colvin in the OF would probably be okay defensively, but on offense they're going to be brutal to watch

Feel free to write them a letter. I think until the whole thing comes into focus you can't make any conclusions. Considering that even the media is in the dark, there's not much we can glean from all this.

I think these moves are a precursor to a big move or two.

DeJesus would play RF and I'm fine with that. Campuano would be the 5th starter.

1) Garza
2) Demspter/FA pitcher/trade
3) Dempster/FA pitcher/trade
4) Randy Wells
5) Chris Campauno

im not disagreeing. I just think they doing what ur saying. Paying for guys 1-2 years and trying to sell to fans they can compete while trying to build the farm. I just rather see younger players over guys 30+ who never won like DeJesus and Capuano. Im going to give Theo and his brass 2 years to build this up. I do expect to be contending by 2014!! 2012 and 2013 il give them pass cause they did get alot of garbage.

I think if they're doing this in addition to trying to sign Pujols they're trying to contend by 2013 at the earliest and have an outside shot to get to the postseason in 2012. I don't think we're thinking the way they are. Which is why it's not making sense to us.

If they're trading Garza then Demp gets bumped to #1 and Zambrano probably sticks around. They were also floating rumors of trading Wells.

Does Pujols really make sense for Cubs? I just have hard time giving him 8 or 9 yr deal at his age. To me Fielder at 27 makes more sense, also Theo said he looking for guys in prime, Fielder fits that perfectly. 8 year deal for Fielder puts him at 35 when contracts ends not 41 like Pujols.

Yeah I forgot about Z... but I'm getting to the point in saying Garza will not be traded. The percent keeps going up in my opinion.

Fielder doesnt really seem as dedicated as Pujols though. He's fat and has always been. Who knows when that will catch up with him. You can also see the lack of dedication in defense. Fielder seems like a guy who is very talented but gets by almost exclusively on his talent as a hitter but he also seems vulnerable to physiological issues that come with being overweight. And the weight concerns only become intensified once he gets this next contract.

Not only that but, who can say whether Pujols is really out of his prime yet? The guy, unwaveringly puts up excellent numbers.

Pujols be 32 this year and if u look at his last 3 years eveyrthing has dropped. Im not saying Pujols isnt a great player. I think he is and will be top 3 player of all time. Fielder always been a big guy. He very athletic for his size and i dont see him falling off the earth anytime soon. Again prime years are considered 27-32. If you sign Fielder ur getting all those prime years. Then only 3 years out of his prim. Where Pujols u getting 1 prime year and 7 out of it.

You don't get it because you don't understand value.

I understand team losing 85 games with these guys making money and where if kids play they lose 90 games making league minimum. Why pay these bums to lose?

Yes, please, and thank you!

I'm constantly alarmed at everyones willingness and determination to suck at the big league level. I don't take inventory of who keeps posting this sentiment but it doesnt really seem like it's people who actually go to games in person (like I do). I like going to games but I simply can't justify paying those ticket prices to support them sitting on a pile of money under the excuse that they want to nurse the farm system up to speed. Sorry but if that's what their approach is, they need to start charging what the KC Royals charge for tickets.

I've brought this up numerous times. I've even reminded people of how Theo spoke of parallel objectives/opportunities.

The Cubs have several people who keep renewing season ticket packages because they dont want to stop renewing the year that they win. The Cubs owe it to those people to put a team out there that's worth watching and not some yahoos who would rather be like the Florida Marlins.

Yeah very true because a team can come up to Theo and say is Garza available? Theo will say...we are listening. The team says we need pitching and we will off top 'spects for Garza. That can happen and it would be time to say "bye bye' Garza.
