The Athletics and Padres are “close” to striking a trade involving several pieces, ESPN.com’s Keith Law reports on Twitter. If the deal is finalized, Oakland will receive first baseman Yonder Alonso and southpaw reliever Mark Rzepczynski from San Diego in exchange for lefties Drew Pomeranz and Jose Torres.

That whole acquire Alonso and trade Rizzo deal didn't work out so great...

Didn't Jed Hoyer say that Bryant would be at 3B for the foreseeable future?

If they were to trade Soler, I believe I also read how natural Baez looked at shagging balls in the outfield last year. Could he possibly be a player in RF for the Cubs, and could he be a decent enough defensive ball player out there?
Sure. He throws hard enough. But then it still doesn't solve CF.

As I referred to on the other post, I guess if he were available, the Cubs could go after Ben Revere with minor league prospects if they needed a 27 year old lead-off man that has speed and plays a decent CF.

That is if Toronto would trade him I guess.

Word has been that Toronto is going to non-tender him. We'll find out today. If they do he's out there.

He is very intriguing to me. I know he strikes out very little and has a good average (career .295) and a moderate OBP (career .328) which indicates that he puts the bat on the ball. We know he has speed as he had 31 swiped bags last year, and 49 the year before.

He is a career .987 CF'er, where as Fowler is a .984. Not huge, but Revere also can play every outfield position, which we all know Maddon likes as well as guys that can run the bags.

I would take Rever. I think he is a better fit for the Cubs than Fowler, although Rever is a below average defender too.

I still think the Diamondbacks are a great trade partner. They have been saying they are looking for young cost controlled SP (Hendricks) and they have abysmal bats up the middle. The Diamondbacks also have pitchers who are close but not ready, and multiple CF options.

Revere has been a terrible defensive OF since leaving Minnesota because the Twins are so good at positioning guys. Also, Revere is basically Juan Pierre 2.0: decent average/good speed/low walks/low power/low strikeouts/poor arm.

agreed...it just goes to show the lack of options for CF next year that we would consider Revere as a viable option. knowing now that we aren't dropping a ton of $$ at one starting pitcher, im seeing where they could end up bringing fowler back

How do you know that team isn't the Cubs? That would be hilarious if we gave him that much when Zimm basically got the same thing and I'd much rather have Zim.

Largely depends on the years. $100 mil over 6 isn't quite the same ring as $100 mil over 5.

Cubs probably cannot afford to be giving a 36 year old Shark 16-18 million when they have all the young guys due new deals by then.
