God, I hope we can plug our two remaining holes (CF and SP) with out giving up Baez, Castro or Soler. I love having such versatility with Baez,Castro, Russell and La Stella. With multiple teams willing to part with SP (Atlanta, SD, Cleveland and TB) maybe one of them is willing to accept minor league prospects.

If Baez is moved, you have to imagine that paves the way for La Stella to have a bigger role backing up Russell and Castro.

Also Senile Bruce Levine was on 670AM and he said the Cubs were very serious about adding Alex Gordon to switch positions to play RF. Apparently the Cubs love his defense and OBP. Although at 31 didn't he peak already? You hate to pay for past years.

Pitching is very costly. Highly unlikely you are going to acquire it for "spare parts."

Its not spare parts. We have some amazing prospects. But they need to go to a team that is fully rebuilding and not looking to compete.

Why do the Cubs need Chapman?

I've been asking myself that as well. Let's say for argument sake that Rodon is not an elite closer. He's definitely in that next step down. And for argument sake, let's just agree that he's closer to the Elite group up than the next group below.

A closer is about the last thing the team needs to worry about. They also risk losing Rodon if he has his mindset on closing which given his results these past two years seems like a sure thing.

I think the idea of trading for a closer is more to move Strop out of the 8th because while decent at some points, he does still walk a lot of batters. That then gives you Grimm and Strop in the 6th/7th. I don't think it's the end all solution but it would definitely be nice.

Then go for an 8th inning guy. Don't mess with the mindset of the closer.

Well I imagine they are. I don't think they were ever really in on Chapman just because the cost for what they seem to be trying to do is too high. However, I could see them getting someone like Storen and push Rondon back to the 8th since Washington seems to be motivated to move him for whatever reason.

Rondon 8th, Chapman 9th...
So now you've just created a chemistry issue by demoting a closer who did a darn good job. You don't trade assets to get something you already have. Strop is OK in the 8th and Ramirez can take that spot as he is now healthy.

Let's review the Cubs. They have three guys (Arrieta, Lester, and Lackey) who project to be high IP guys. They have a closer (Rondon) who had a fairly good year and then another reliever (Strop) who just posted another solid year. This isn't to also mention a few guys (Grimm, Ramirez, Wood, Cahill) who are also fairly good for you. So while Chapman would be great, the cost of any prospects is high (probably higher for Cincy to trade him in division) and it also makes guys like Strop/Rondon upset over their reduced roles.

Cubs don't need a damn thing in the bullpen. They maybe could upgrade their starting CF and if a good value for a SP comes along, that'd be great too. That's about it.

I would love to get Heyward but I just don't see the penny pinching Ricketts opening up the checkbook this year.

Has nothing to do with the owner and their desires but rather how much money they can throw back into the team.

Apparently spending $26 mil/season last year and $16 mil/season so far this year on pitching counts as "penny pinching."

Really dude? You're still bringing that up? You've got a memory like a scorned wife.

In all seriousness, you're a fan of Strop? The guy fucking sucks man.
So let's get this straight...saying a guy is OK makes me a fan? LOL. Ramirez is 8th inning guy unless unavailable. Strop/Grimm 6/7. Simple and they didn't trade assets to get something they already have.
