How are you going to say on one hand you don't know what they will get and then on the other act like it is a good price.

Additionally, history shows us that 37/38 is more likely to fail than 29.

I don't think you have one valid point. We will see what Kazmir and Leake get. My guess is 4@55-60. I would rather have that and the pick. I would rather have two more years before having to go into FA again for another pitcher.

at the end of the day though you are not going to win the WS neither with Lackey or Leake, we needed Price or Greinke. I don't blame anyone because they got crazy money but this is the truth

Why not? The cubs were in the NLCS and lost with Arrieta and Lester on the mound. Lackey would likely have been a better start than Hammel. The cubs needed to hit. They pitched fine.

you are right on the series but if i look the picture as a whole i feel more comfortable about hitting than pitching, i don't see how we are going to close the gap with Lackey, as i said he is an improvement but not the icing on the cake we needed

They can still add a starter mid season. They were not comfortable with the the way the market was playing out this year. That is all. Add to it the Dodgers took a major blow with Greinke going to Azl. Add to it the Giants lost out on him to. So both teams have no super 1/2 punch anymore.

yes, this is the good news. Greinke going to AZ defently doesn't make AZ a threat, weakened the Dodgers and forces the Giants to look elsewhere

I didn't care for it either but but it only a 2 yr deal and worst come to worst they can always flip him..lol

Key to the rotation now in my mind is replacing Hammel in rotation. .
Depending on who they trade for, he could hopefully be good enough to eventually push Lackey to the 4th starter..

One thing we can probably be 99.9% sure on is that they probably wont be looking for starting pitching next off season Via FA or trade, especially if they trade for one now.

You could have said the same thing about the cards trading for Lackey two trading deadlines ago. We'll see what Leake/Kazmir get but even if they do get less there's no guarantee the cubs would have got them or that they even like them. I just don't see the point in getting so hung up over the 27th pick in the draft. You're unlikely to get a franchise changing player with the 27th pick. And whether or not you actually like Lackey, he's been a consistently decent starter. Since debuting at 23 he's had 2 seasons under 1.9 fWAR. On the contrary he has 12 at or above 1.9 fWAR. If all you get out of him is 2 fWAR he's still as good or better than Leake who's best season was 2.3. And Lackey is coming off a 3.6 season.

Saying he's might fail because he's old is kind of useless statement because there's no guarantee of that. And there's no guarantee a younger pitcher wont fail either. In the past 4 seasons Kazmir's thrown 531 IP. Lackey's through 765. Leake's thrown 777. Kazmir's had injury issues in the past and over the past 3 years has been worth 2.76 fWAR/season. Lackey's been worth 2.8. Leake's been worth 2. So, if we're being honest here, Kazmir has more injury issues. Leake hasn't pitched as well as the other two. Long story short, they are all far from flawless. I mentioned before in this thread I thought Leake made sense but I also seem to remember reading something that suggested he wanted to stay on the west coast. And frankly, i want no part of kazmir.

Like I said before, if you don't like Lackey that's fine but I think it's kinda silly to be at all worried about losing that draft pick.

They are gaining a pick for losing Fowler. Those picks are a wash on talent level and draft spending.

Here it the thing: Hendricks avg 5.6 IP per game. Hammel 5.5 per game. That is where the problem was. Neither were getting past the 6th in a contestant basis. Those innings add up on the pen and that is why Cahill became invaluable in MR to shore up those two's lacking.

I almost think they will look at a MR to replace Cahill.

"Contestant basis"?

I'd like to buy a vowel.

Hammel was good until hammy issue at all star break. Never looked the same afterward and couldnt go past 5. Hopefully he comes back stronger.

People said this last year too and who did the Cubs pick up? Nobody even though Price was there for the taking. The way Price pitched last year after the trade, there is a chance the Cubs get a lot closer to overtaking the Cards for the division. Maybe they end up with home field over the Mets. Maybe Arrieta, Price, Lester is enough to make the Mets shit their collective pants and Cubs advance to the WS. Bottomline is Cubs didn't pull the trigger on the trade so what gives you confidence they would trade for anything but a bag of balls at the deadline?

Also these FA prices are getting way out of hand. If Heyward gets 10/300, what does that mean for Trout/Harper? 10/450?

Great point! It's getting ridiculous! Heyward is looking at least 20mil per year for .280 80 and 15 player that is a gold glove fielder???? What is kris Bryant going to worth in three years? 35 per???

I hope Bryant is truly worth that in 3 years...
