Why Hammel? Why not Haren? Haren actually looked good his last few starts.

you really want a guy that serves up homeruns like pancakes at IHOP pitching in the nlds? ill roll with hammel instead

Think Madden finds a way to use Lester twice and Arrieta twice? How many days rest do they need, usually five right? Can they go three?

9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th

lester can definitely get used twice. arrieta in game 3 and then he might be able to give you a couple relief innings in game 5 if needed

So was putting Hendricks on the 25 man for the Pirates. Right now it's about playing who is hot, KV7.

I don't think a couple good starts against two bottom feeder teams qualifies as hot I guess is the difference in our thinking regarding haren

Cool. I just don't have a ton of faith in any starting Cubs pitcher not named Lester or Arrieta.

if we get bounced I think thatll be the reason...offseason theo and co will be upgrading the starting rotation for sure (david price come on down)

Hammel has been bad the entire second half. Is that a large enough sample size? Now instead of a bunch of bloviating and posturing, you should explain why Hammel makes sense compared to Haren. Otherwise your opinion appears to be "well because he just does".

despite his 2nd half struggles I have more faith in hammel than haren. I don't really have to give you a "reason." more or less I was commenting that hammel will be on the 25 man roster and haren wont. that's the decision I think Joe makes and his decision is the one that matters ultimately

Maddon's decision is the one that matters? Holy shit. I thought he would post on CCS and ask our opinion first.

don't get salty now lol

I wouldn't be surprised if hammel ends up starting game 2 over Hendricks since its in st Louis. send the veteran to the mound and start Hendricks at home in game 4

one thing i WILL say about madden is that if a pitcher is struggling, he's quick to yank him (again, anybody not named Lester/Arrieta) to try and work his relievers. usually SOMEBODY gets hot and can shut it down. not always, but most of the time. we definitely will get some pitching help in the off-season.

oh...and why the hell is this game so EARLY? 5:30 PM? doesn't give the city of chicago (or st. louis) much time to get home from work.

I thought the same thing. going to be a lot of people leaving work early tomorrow

This is going to be an intense series. When was the last time we faced the Cards in the playoffs?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Joe go with Dan Haren and use him Saturday. Temperature is going to be about 60 degrees and Haren, an extrme flyball pitcher, will be better in colder weather. Not sure 60 is cold enough but it wouldn't shock me if Joe went that way (plus Haren has pitched well against the Cards in two starts with a sub 1ERA).

With that being said, Hammel has been a better pitcher than Haren because he's typically been better at getting deeper into games and he's more likely to give you 5-6 plus innings. And Haren simply doesn't miss many bats and the Cardinals are such a good hitting team you might not try and run out a guy like Haren.
