Well, these numbers are interesting.

http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_statistics.php?ds=30&f1=2012_s&f2=5v5&f4=C+LW+RW&f5=CHI&c=0+1+3+5+4+6+7+8+13+14+29+30+32+33+34+45+46+63+67

I read this in another blog and wanted to bring it over here for discussion. That's the CORSI ratings of the Hawks forwards. Basically, CORSI is the sum of the shots, attempted shots, blocked shots, etc., that happen while you're on the ice. Positive ratings generally mean you're in the offensive zone when you're on the ice. Negative ratings mean the opposite.

Top player? Brandon Saad. If anyone wants to doubt this kid, please let me know, so I can tell you how wrong you are.

Bottom 3? This is scary: Kane, Bolland, Sharp. That line still gets its points here and there but it's not up to par with the rest of the team, lately.

Your #2 and #3 are Bollig and Frolik. That should draw some concern as to what these stats are really showing and what they really mean. Not to mention Saad being #1. If you ask why Saad is #1 on these stats, I would say that 99% of the reason is because of Hossa/Toews.

I think everyone should still doubt Saad. He is showing some more consistency and effort, but he hasn't shown that he can score or create at the professional level at a pace that most would like to see out of a guy that has been touted as a top 6 (both AHL and NHL). He has a very bright future but if that future is right now as a top 6 is still in question. I like him as a prospect and think he has a bright future.

True. But you could make a decent "sample size" argument, considering the ice time Saad has and Bollig has. Saad has more than double the ice time and 3 extra games ... that's a whole lotta minutes. Also, if you check the CORSI relative stat line (which is your CORSI rating related to the rest of the team. Higher number means team is on offense more when you're on the ice), Saad has a clear margin there, too.

Does he benefit from skating with Toews and Hossa? Absolutely. But I still see Saad making plenty of subtle plays that show he belongs. Little 5 foot passes just before taking a hit that move the puck quickly to a teammate. Also saw him jump off the boards into the defensive zone and into the center of the ice to help break the puck out of the zone against San Jose. Yeah, those are little things. But this is a rookie making those plays. That says something, to me.

I really like Saad as a prospect but I just don't like him (minus the last 3 games where he is coming along and it is great to see) overall on the first line as of now. Like I said, last three games he is proving me wrong and finally bringing some value to that line. However, if he isn't scoring or putting up points on that line, then he better be doing something else to benefit that line. One point in 9 games isn't going to cut it when you are playing with two of the best players in the game. Carcillo on the first line isn't going to put up points, but he is going to hit, forecheck, and protect...things that we don't see Saad do. Saad is very shifty and has made some nice moves one on one but overall I feel like he is still a work in progress and I don't know if that is overall beneficial for Toews/Hossa. Trust me, when he steps out on the ice tonight I am hoping he puts up a hattrick and makes me eat crow, there is nothing better than when a prospect goes beyond expectations because that is great for the Blackhawks.

But did you notice that his numbers have a noticeable gap ahead of Toews and Hossa? How do you explain that?

Also, I've seen Saad forecheck and play defense just as well as Carcillo.

Let's see how he responds now that he finally got an NHL goal. Wonder if that'll relax him a bit and the points start piling up.

How do I explain the gap? I explain it in being a flaw in reading that much into CORSI and for the same reason Bollig/Frolik are #2/#3. The gap from Saad to Toews/Hossa really means nothing as anyone who watches the game, knows exactly where each player stands and what each player brings.

Trust me when I say I'm rooting for Saad here but still am going to be skeptic. Hell, I still root for Beach to prove me wrong...

Saad is also facing waaay tougher competition than Bollig. Check the QoC (Quality of competition) column. Yeah, I know, Toews and Hossa, right? Heh.

I believe you're rooting for Saad I just don't understand the extent of your skepticism. I've seen Saad do just about everything other than put up points. And I think that's going to change now that he finally got on the scoresheet. Guess we'll all see.

To me, if he isn't putting up points with that line then he isn't doing enough to be on that line. Might as well just have Frolik there. A guy who is going to work hard, do the small things right, but isn't going to put up points. There are a lot of guys who can do that RIGHT NOW (right now being key as Saad has more of a future than a guy like Frolik at the time being). Atleast with Carcillo, he does those things and then forechecks harder, hits harder, and protects Toews/Hossa better while not being expected to put up that many points.

Only 9 games in and Saad has definitely improved over the last 3. Hopefully he continues to improve and the goal lets him be a little more patient. I think he has been jumping the gun on shooting and if he waits just a little bit longer, he might have the goalie down or more will open up.

And if the Hawks weren't 8-0-2 I could understand an argument for moving him off of that line and getting someone else there to get some points on the board. But, luckily, the Hawks are 8-0-2 and they can afford to let Saad (hopefully) play himself out of that slump. I'm not going to guarantee 10 points in the next 5 games for Saad, I'm just saying it wouldn't surprise me. I think he's been playing that well.

That 8-0-2 record can mask a lot of things, like the recently subpar play of the 2nd line, which was my initial reason for posting those numbers.

Agreed completely.

Reports out there all stating that Olesz, Montador, and Carcillo are all skating together. Apparently Carcillo might be joining the team practices later this week.

Ottawa sun:
bruce garrioch reports senators gm bryan murray is working the phones in search of a reasonably priced defenseman who can help the club make the playoffs following the season-ending injury to erik karlsson. Murray isn’t willing to part with a first-round pick or top prospect, but that’s the asking price from the teams he’s contacted. Garrioch considers the islanders mark streit as one who could help the senators pp, but the isles remain in the playoff chase. He doesn’t consider hurricanes blueliner joe corvo a good fit, as “they’ve been down that road before”. He noted montreal’s tomas kaberle is no longer an effective regular player and contributor. Phoenix’s keith yandle would be “a long shot at best”, plus the asking price would be expensive. He also include edmonton’s ryan whitney on the list of available blueliners. Garrioch also reports murray dismissed speculation he would shop goaltender craig anderson for a quality defenseman and call up robin lehner. Don brennan, meanwhile, wondered if islanders defenseman lubomir visnovsky might be a good option, given his reluctance to join the isles.

There were 2 Blackhawks scouts at the Penguins-Senators game. Wild and Ducks were other Western Conference teams that had scouts there

A Blackhawks scout at an Eastern Conference game, this year, is pretty much only going to mean one thing. Scouting a player(s), not the team.

Ottawa is definitely a team that may be going into selling mode at some point this year.
