This has become a hell of a debate eh?

Here's the way I see it:

1) We have no second line center. We did not address that yet.

2) We are talking about moving Kane to the 2 center, which means we need a sniper to take his spot on the wing, and we haven't done that.

3) We are not physical on the front line in the corners or in front of the other team's net. We haven't addressed that.

4) We are thin on defense especially when you get to the third pairing. You can argue that we addressed that with Brookbank, but I don't see it. He's a spare.

5) We don't defend the PP well. You can argue that Brookbank will help that, and I'll go along with that. He's fairly effective defending on the PP.

6) We have well below average goaltending. We haven't addressed that.

Of the moves we've made, signing Bollig (total waste) and Oduya (because of his ridiculous pricetag) were mistakes. Signing Brookbank to a fat raise was likely a mistake.

What's more important is what we haven't done. We didn't shore up the defense, we didn't get a brick wall in the pipes, and we didn't get more physical on the blueline (of the top 4 variety) or up front.

Maybe we'll sign Semin and he'll get his shit together, and we'll sign Carle and he'll be the defensive stalwart with Leddy on the second pairing, pushing Hammer and Montador to the third group (and I can live with that assuming Montador plays again without symptoms), and maybe Crawford bounces back and shows some grit in the paint and stands on his head, and all is well and we make a run.

The problem is that there are a lot of ifs here and we haven't done much if anything to turn the ?s into !s, which is what we all expect from a squad that won the Cup a few years ago.

Remember, Montador still hasn't been cleared for contact.

Hawks are thin on defense.

all I know is they are going to have to make some critical moves. No stop gap fillers, it doesnt work, and the moneyball philosophy doesnt apply to hockey in all seriousness.

the defense is pretty bad regardless of a full year of oduya, its awful. they cant rely on depth like other teams since they are top heavy with a good top 5, but there are still question marks with them and number 6 has to repeat his numbers from last year.

of course they will make the playoffs but they dont have the depth, goaltending, or the defense to make a serious run. oh well. welcome to the bowman era.

:obama:

We just don't think it is a trend that FA's don't want to sign here.

Let's go back to the transition between Tallon/Bowman.

I can't find full free agent lists and say who is good, so I'm looking at random top 10 free agent lists.

2009: Khabibulin and Havlat were somewhat sought after free agents, and we let them go. We got the big prize in Marian Hossa.
2010: Mart Turco was probably considered a Top 10 free agent at the time. It didn't work out well, but we did sign him. I'm not sure we even pursued Kovalchuk, and it would not have made sense to given the lack of cap space.
2011: Brunette wasn't a big free agent, but he was in that second tier. I'm not sure we pursued any big names.
2012: We miss out on Parise and Suter, okay... they went to Parise's home town to play together... so what?

I don't see a trend. If it is "OMG the Blackhawks didn't sign the top free agent on the market three years in a row now"... then well, you don't always get the prize, there are 30 NHL teams and money doesn't mean everything to every player. Of those three years we had no cap space one year, the second year we didn't pursue a top FA even after trading Campbell, and the third year we missed out on two FA's.

I don't see a trend. Plain and simple.

I don't see why people are bashing the brookbank signing. He doesn't put up great offensive numbers but the guy hits and blocks shots. He is going to help the PK

Because the Hawks need alot more than him. They have big gaping holes on defense.

And besides Q plays a Charmin Soft style..no hitting allowed.

The deals they signed where ones I mocked up in whatever thread it was. I didn't have either of them making less than 5 mil a year tho for a salary

And you assume they won't do more to address it why?

He's a solid 6th/7th Dman signing. I see no problems with it.

The success or failure of the Hawks has very, very little to do with Brookbank.

I d'état and that, but he's going to be a 5-6 guy. I don't see him not being physical, he's a brookbank, that pretty much runs in their family. And bouwmeester better not be dealt to the hawks

Right now, you can't trade Hammer if Montador isn't cleared any time soon.
