Fair enough Nick. Let me ask you this. With this kind of signing, is it fair to now EXPECT nothing but elite play from him from now on going forward?

BEARS

I've had this chat about labelling it. Elite? Everyones agreed he isn't elite and I have never said otherwise. I want a winning Bears team full stop.

On saying that, if you want to label it, then yes, I expect Elite play because of the situation Cutler finds himself in. An O-line that is settled other than at C. Two threats on the outside, a top TE (top 10?) a top 5 Running back (elite) Earl Bennett, M. Wilson and a fully functioning O.

I want winning seasons. I want to watch the Bears compete season after season. That's what this is all about.

You have an answer from me, quote it if you wish.

Lol you're so stupid that you don't realize when your foot is in your mouth. This is now the second time you've essentially admitted that having Cutler and annoying those who aren't sold on him is more important to you than the success of the Bears. Hilarious!

Actually..I have both..Bears success and annoyed haters...America is great isnt it??

Guys need to relax. The 126 million looks big because it is 7 years. Jay is never going to see the last two years of the deal. Furthermore, I suspect Stein has structured it in a way where the cap hit for Jay is actually going to be less than the 14 million it was this year. Here his how you can easily structure a 7 year 126 million deal with 54 million guaranteed assuming the guaranteed money is all signing bonus.

BS SB Cap Hits
3m 7.72m 10.72m
5m 7.72m 12.72m
7m 7.72m 14.72m
10m 7.72m 17.72m
11m 7.72m 18.72m
18m 7.72m 25.72m
18m 7.72m 25.72m
72m 54.0m 126.04m

If his contract is structured anywhere like this I would hope that after year 3 and before year 5 that the Bears will have someone on the roster to replace Cutler or they will be actively trying to restructure his deal

I'd like to offer an answer to this question, but without getting into all of that "elite" shit.

I think Jay Cutler will need to play better than he has in the past if he wants to live up to that contract.

I also think he will.

I think you should expect Cutler to act like Cutler and not expect him to be elite just because some money got thrown his way.

Jay took what the Bears agreed to..You hold that against him?

I sure don't. But there's a reason why the Bears have only won one superbowl and have been a pretty mediocre franchise for decades, they tend to botch these kind of decisions.

Personally I would hope at that three year point there is a QB on the roster ready if (I'll keep it positive) it goes South with Cutler, that can step in and Run the O.

More than I expected for sure... too much in my mind but they know he would get monster offers from TB, Tenn, Houston, etc
But I've always looked at Jay as a top 12 QB... (not elite)...
He got the 7th highest money...
Until Philly, San Fran and Seattle do theirs in the next couple years... then Jay will be about the tenth highest paid...
I don't think he's top ten... maybe tenth... and QBs make the big bucks so this is really not as bad as 126 Mil looked at first...

Congrats to the Cutler supporters who got their wish with this extension. Hopefully Jay leads us to multiple Superbowls during this contract.

GO BEARS!

Basically this is a three year, $54 mil deal. After that you can get out without much if any repercussions.

126 million is insane. Kiss at least one potential FA goodbye, maybe two. Even the biggest Cutler homers didn't try to claim he'd get anything close to 100 million. We as fans better hope that his potential finally arrives and that he stays healthy or the team is screwed for a good long while.

We are still going to have quite a bit of money to spend in free agency. It is about the cap hit now how much the contract is signed for. We have the best in the business in Cliff Stein in working the salary cap.

and 5 years from now $25M won't seem like crazy money. Broadcast deal does up and with it, the cap and players salaries.

Not to mention if we do release Peppers it is almost a wash with the Cutler contact by getting almost all the money back from the 2014 Cutler cap hit.

I hope that they draft someone this year or next to start grooming for that point but if they don't I am hoping for a restructure around year 4

Well, all I'll say is you better hope that he plays to a level in accordance with this insane contract, because you're setting yourself up for a lot of abuse if he doesn't improve. A day of fun for seven more years of mediocrity - I hope you really enjoy today.
