We had 45 million in cap space to start.

We have 65 million if we cut Peppersand Bush.

At best after Cutler we will have 42.5 without a real way to get more.

Right now if everything reported is accurate we have

42.5
-Jennings
-Slauson
-Gould
-Fiammetta

What do you think is going to happen with McCown?

Which we most certainly should.

Honestly, if the Bears still draft a QB that could legitimately be the future, I'll be much more comfortable with the Cutler contract. I just worry that this means Emery has no plans of drafting a QB anytime soon. Like not before it's too late.

You offer him 1-2 million a year for 2-3 years.

If he takes it and wants to be here good, but if he doesn't you move on.

I think he would re-sign.

The picks this season are going to defense.

My guess is 3 starting free agents and 5 of our 7 picks. I would also expect us to try and trade down and get as many top 100 picks as we can to add to the defense.

But Garoppolo won't be available in the third next year.

But besides Jimmy, this is really the year to land a potential franchise QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. I'm not sure, but I don't think next years class is looking anywhere near as deep.

I'm fine with that. Can still draft one of the many talented QBs in the third though. The biggest fix on D will come with Tucker being shown the fucking door.

Have you seen the list of FA QB's? There is nobody out there, Josh will have plenty of offers. I hope he stays here, but I could see a team desperate enough to offer him a shot at starting.

He doesn't sound like he wants to start.

I think it would be smart to draft a QB this year. This draft seems to have good value at the QB positions. Plus this will allow Trestman to completely mold a QB from scratch the way he sees fit. This would allow us a fallback option in case Cutler doesn't work out in the next 3 years.

Not 100% sold on Cutler and paying him Aaron Rodgers type money for the next 3 years? I understand your point to a degree, but this is big fucking money and cap space going his way.

They paid him the going rate for QBs these days based on recent deals. That's the reality. The difference is they allegedly gave him no SB money at all. Are there other QBs out there with similar deals?

I don't think that's it at all. The guaranteed portion of Cutler's deal is tied in with Trestman's contract.

It signals to us that they are going all in for Superbowl runs these next three years. That's exciting to me as a Bears fan.

I agree with this portion of your post 100%.

Again, show me another franchise QB with a deal tied to their coaches contract? This to me feels more like let's roll with Jay right to give us some time to groom a young QB to replace him. If he plays well then fine but if not, they can cut him with absolutely no salary cap hit.

I got that same impression, and as much as I loved the way he played this year, I found this to be a bit of a turnoff.

If McCown doesn't sign back with us then I think the Bears are liable to take a QB in the 3rd round or later to groom and be the backup. If they sign McCown then I think they may wait until next year.

Yea, and I don't think teams are gonna be gushing over him. He's too old to get excited about, and any teams that need a quarterback that badly are teams that won't be good for a couple years anyway. There is no way to tell if he is actually a good quarterback now, or if he is a product of Trestman's system. I think he can get good backup money though, probably 2 to 3 million. But If i were him, I would take anything close to that from the Bears. He's the perfect backup for the Bears, and I think he realizes this system is perfect for him(even if his role is just as a good backup qb).

Desperado, I don't feel like searching, but I do recall you saying yourself that Cutler should be signed, but lately quoting dollars much less than the signed amount
and more importantly not amounts that would kill our cap like 22 million. Am I wrong? You were concerned with fixing our defense and said that we will sign him like 4 years 52 million, or something like that.
Yeah, 3 for 52 is what it's now standing at correct? So, eh..

But.

Bears got Cutty for 7!!

We are just choosing to eat the ugly year if it this year when we have the cap room. It will make shopping this year a little more difficult.

But in 2 years when we we extending Jeffery and Long and our QB is making 15 million instead of 22 it will look like genius.

We are just taking the medicine year 1 rather than year 4.
